Hawkfrost stared at Brambleclaw while Firestar writhed beside him.
"This is our chance to take revenge on Firestar for our father's death. He could've tried to stop Scourge, but he just stood there and watched Tigerstar die, over and over and over."
Brambleclaw bristled. "No, I won't do it. Keep still, Firestar, I'll get you out in a heartbeat." He lowered down, sniffing at the fox trap.
The tom's icy blue gaze raked his kin's pelt. "He's already losing lives." He stuck his paw in the pool of blood that was pulsing from the ginger leader's neck. "This blood could be taken, as I said, as revenge for our father..."
Squaring his shoulders, Brambleclaw unsheathed his claws. "No! I said no!"
"Oh, I can kill you as well, can't I?"
"If you ever kill Firestar!"
He chuckled. (Why do I imagine him with Syndrome's voice from the Incredibles now-) "You really think I won't? You're not showing signs of stopping me!"
The other tabby clawed at the trap's wire, only making it tighter. Firestar choked as he convulsed again, losing lives one by one.
"Really... You think he'll survive?"
Hawkfrost twitched his tail as he made his way around Firestar's body and toward his kin. "Do you?"
"Well, I think there's a chance..."
"Fool! Did you think I did this alone? Do you think you're safe within your own Clan?"
Firestar coughed and then went still. Forever.
Brambleclaw's eyes flashed.
"Well..." Hawkfrost meowed, turning back to the fox trap. In one swift movement, he grabbed the thorn, twisted around, and stuck it straight into Brambleclaw's throat.
"Think again."
He staggered backward, tripping on a stone and falling into the lake. Blood pulsed from the thorn, and the other tom stood up. "Hawkfrost..." he gasped through breaths. "This isn't over. We'll meet again, don't know where or when, but I know we'll meet again, some dark day..."
With those words, he fell into the lake, the waves lapping at the thorn.
"Come on out, Ashfur."
The grey speckled tom padded from the bushes.
"Let's give you some 'scratches' so you can say you fought me off, but Firestar died, and you can become leader."
He dipped his paw in the pool of blood that came from Firestar and swiped it across Ashfur's pelt.
"There. It looks convincing."
He nodded, then meowed, "What will they ask about Brambleclaw being dead?"
Hawkfrost shook his head. "It doesn't matter. Just go limp and you'll get sympathy."
