Jamie's POV
Someone knocks on my door."Go away." Is my immediate response.
The person knocks again and I turn over in my bed, shutting the book in my hand and turning my music down. "I said go away!"
It seems so quiet now, all I can hear is the rain from the storm that started hours ago. It's gotten darker since then, although i'm not sure if it's because of the weather or the time.
"Can I come in, please?" I was expecting anybody but Lexie to come to my door. But here she was, her voice small against the rain outside.
I sighed. I couldn't tell her no.
Closing my book, I swing my legs over my bed, and make my way to the door, putting my book on my desk on my way over.
The moment the lock clicks Lexie opens the door.
"If mom sent you up here tell her i'm fine." I say immediately.
Lexie shakes her head, "I was hoping you could tell me some more stories."
I regret snapping at her, I shouldn't have assumed. I let out another sigh and open my door wider, allowing her to come in. "Sorry." I say to her.
She smiles as if everything's right in the world. "Thunderstorms make people mad sometimes." She skips over to my bed.
I wish it were that simple.
She sits down onto the bed and faces me with a smile. I close the door and join her on the bed. "What story do you want to hear?" I ask her.
We both lean back against the headboard and throw the covers over our legs while she thinks. "Did you ever travel with them?" She finally asks.
I nod my head and watch as her eyes widen. "Where?" She asks with a smile.
I look out my window, where the rain has calmed down a bit and the thunder wasn't so loud anymore. Lexie snuggles close to me and I wrap my arm around her.
"Everywhere." I smile for a second. "Mom and Dad were seasonal workers, they worked hard all year while I was in school, and when summer came they both got every second of it off work. They didn't waste a second of it and we traveled all summer every summer."
I look down at Lexie, she has a smile on her face that makes me want to smile too.
"What was your favourite place?" She asks me. She cuddles closer, if that's even possible.
I have to think for a moment. Of all the places my parents took me when I was young, I don't know which one would be my favourite.
"I don't know." I answer honestly.
The look on her face doesn't change but I know that answer isn't enough for her so I pick a place at random.
"California." I tell her.
I didn't think her smile could get any bigger but it does, she pushes gently on my arm and jumps in her spot, claiming "Tell me about it." over and over again.
I nod and she relaxes, cuddling back into my bed. I can tell I have her undivided attention.
"I was young when we went," I start. "I can't remember how old but I definitely wasn't over 7. They took me to this place in California that was surrounded by water. Everywhere you'd look there was beaches and lakes and it was totally beautiful. I remember the first day we were there, my dad and I went down to explore the beach; the hotel we were staying at wasn't far from it. So, while my mom unpacked our stuff, dad and I went down to the beach. We walked for miles, Rao we must have been gone for hours because by time we got back it was dark outside. I remember looking out at the water and seeing people surfing, so I asked my dad if I could learn to surf and he just laughed."
I feel myself smile and I can't stop myself. But I also can't stop the tears that well in my eyes. These were simpler times.
"But the next day, when I woke up, there was a surf board at the foot of my bed. Dad had gotten up early that morning and bought me a surf board. We all spent the majority of that trip down by the water and he taught me to surf."
I look to Lexie who's still smiling. "Do you think you still remember how to surf?"
I look across the room at a picture on my wall.
A sunset taken on a beach, overlooking the water just as the sun peaks over the horizon. The water's calm and only a few ripples run through it. It looks like the perfect photo captured at the perfect time. Taken seconds later, the sun would be gone and the water would be dark. Taken seconds earlier and the sun would peak above the waterline too much, creating a glare along the water that would bounce back at the camera.
I had convinced mum to let me buy it last year because it reminded me of how many sunsets on the beach i'd watched with dad.
"I'd like to think so." I finally tell Lexie.
She sits up in bed, "Do you think one day you could teach me?"
"Yeah, one day."
She nods her head and the smile remains.
I let her cuddle into my side again and I bring the bedsheet up to her shoulders. This was one of those nights where she'll be sleeping with me.
"Did you ever go to Disney Land?" She asks as she closes her eyes.
I smile again, pulling her closer so that her head is tucked into my side.
"Twice." I tell her. "Once when I was too young to remember, if it weren't for the photos I would've never believed that we had gone. The second time was Christmas break the year before the fire..."
And I spent the remainder of the night telling her all about Disney during Christmas time until I was sure she was fast asleep, then I drifted off to sleep too.
