The first thing I heard when I woke up on the 2nd of January was the constant ringing of Mariam's bell, waking all of the orphans in my room up. I groaned. First day of senior year. I took my hoodie and ripped jeans from my cupboard and collected my towel from Mariam, who somehow managed to remain calm despite the raucous chatter of teenagers, who were making their beds.
"C'mon slowpoke! The showers are going to be full!" Leah, my best friend pulled me past many orphans to the shower room. "You ready for senior year?"
"Six more months until the end of hell. What's there to be ready for?" I replied, rolling my eyes. She was that type of girl that everyone likes, even though she doesn't have everything handed to her on a silver platter. The friendliest girl I ever met, even the 'cool kids' tolerate her. After wearing our clothes, we quickly headed to the dining hall, grabbed a slice of buttered toast and immediately headed outside the orphanage to wait for the school bus. Daniella, Rainer, and Richard were already there, munching on their toast as the school bus made its way towards the orphanage. They waved at us. Quoting 'Mean Girls', 'The greatest people you will ever meet.'
Rainer and Richard were on the football team as centres while Danielle was your typical nerd, who wants a doctorate degree in university after graduating. Me and Leah fell into the 'we just want to survive high school' category. The bus doors opened, me being the first to enter and an empty can was thrown right into my face.
"SCORE 1-0 TO QUARTERBACK OF THE YEAR....JONAH ANDERSON BECKETT!!!" Mason Gray high fived Jonah, who obviously threw the can, both sitting at the back of the bus with all the other jocks. The bus really does make it a habit to pick us all up based on our status in high school. Obviously, we were the last, orphans with nothing to offer except for a single cent. I flushed and pulled on my hood as I sat down as far away as possible from them aka all the way in front. Leah sat right next to me after shooting a glare towards Mason, who immediately sat up straight. While Danielle sat right behind us, Rainer and Richard sat with the jocks all the way behind. They didn't really join in on making my life miserable but they didn't do anything either to stop the bullying. So that probably confirms their allegiance.
"Grow up already, Addison. Don't be such a wuss." Jonah yelled at me, his friends guffawing. He has called me a loser for over the 4 years I met him in middle school and that always seems to make me wallow in self pity. I turned around, spotting him flash the loser sign at me and blowing a raspberry at me.
"Ignore them, they're just messing with ya." Leah patted my back before plugging in her earphones.
I really didn't know how many times he would do this to break me. But...
Why do I feel all jittery inside every time I look at him?

"You have a crush on him." Leah Carson stated clearly before shoving the her pizza slice into her mouth before I could even open my mouth. "You totes seem to have a thing for him but I don't take you for a masochist though..."
"It's not a crush- its just that I feel that he's just acting, like he actually doesn't want to make me suffer."
"Well, whatever you say- I have no say in it. But Mason's really my type. Too bad he's a jerk." Bits of cheese landed on my slice of pizza. Whatever. I already lost my appetite. I pushed my tray away towards her. "Not hungry? More for me then." She grabbed the slice of pizza from my tray. Man, that girl could eat without ever gaining any weight at all. It wasn't long before it was snatched out of her hands just before she was about to sink her teeth into it. Speak of the devil. Make that two devils.
Mason and Jonah were both right beside our table with the football team and the cheer squad clinging to them.
"Move it Carson," Mason exclaimed smugly. "You're at our table."
"We don't give two shits. Now gimme back my pizza." Leah rose up to try to grab the slice from his hands.
"Not gonna happen, dork." He took a big bite out of the slice, instantly devouring half of the pizza. The jocks behind him 'oohed' like every other typical jock would. Jonah smirked and his eyes landed on me.
"You don't belong here, Lisa." he calmly said. "Listen to Mason. Piss. Off." The tone of his voice demanded immediate compliance. Half of me wanted to get the heck out of the cafeteria right there and then but there was some part of me that didn't want to show the whole school that I wasn't easily pushed around either. Seeing that I didn't move, he flipped my tray over, dumping it onto the floor. There was a LOUD crash.
The whole cafeteria went silent. Then, everyone was suddenly eye-raping us like the annoying busybodies they are. Jonah was that serious.
Leah immediately grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the cafeteria doors. Right before I stepped out, I heard Jonah yell, "Loser!" at me. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I stumbled through the doors, with Leah right on my heels.
I hate how he always knows to humiliate me at exactly the right moment.
