~ Alisa's Pov ~
It was my second week at the colony and it had already become a living hell. Due to the fact that I was living alone, I was already at a disadvantage.
Bigger families got bigger space, more food, clothes, luxuries, etc. Me? I got a one room apartment with a broken toilet seat and no running water. In addition the families get their nice dining area with hot breakfast, lunch, and dinner! While all of us outcasts fight for a bench seat and get (at best) a stale loaf of bread with a small bowl of watery soup. Why does the government do this to us you ask? Survival. Big families equal lots of kids and that equals a new generation to fix their screw ups. It's not like any of us asked for them to start bombing every goddamn country on the map. And then, of course, the other countries decided to bomb back with twice as much force. And that is why half of us in this colony are nearly starved to death. To make matters worst there are rumors of a chemical disease spreading like wildfire in eastern Asia. Well at least that's what the old man in room 22B told me. I don't believe shit that comes out of his mouth, but in times like this I can't help to be a bit fearful. Whatever it is I can sense that something is up, something the government won't tell us. I've noticed they lately have been rushing people out of the dining hall when usually they couldn't care less. And all the staff members have been trying their best not to make contact with any of us filthy misfits. But these few rude gestures aren't what worries me the most, the death tole does.Things move fast in the colony because there are always a few people who can't find a home. When a person dies any one found on the street gets the apartment. I know because I was one of them before they found me my place. The streets would always be littered with those people. They would pack up the allies and street corners trying to find some place they could claim as their own. Now they were nowhere in sight. It seems they all suddenly disappeared. I would've thought the government relocated them, but then I noticed the stench. It was coming from the cemetery.
I thought that pile was mulch or soil or something. No, they had piled up the dead. A 12 foot pile of rotting flesh and bone. I slammed the window shut when I saw that horror. What happened to them? Had the government killed them all off? I knew the government couldn't murder people with such a small population to begin with. They were to desperate to keep the country alive. Who could it be? I tried to come up with clues, but I fell short. I could only think of one similarity between all those rotting corpses. They were all elderly.
