~Alisa's Pov~

I woke up shivering, I turn to look at Colton only to realize he isn't there. I jump up and look around. I crouch down and slip a knife from my belt. I crawl towards a patch of trees not too far away from where we slept. I peer around the corner to check for any visitors. It's still dark outside and all I can make out is a tall stiff figure. I inch closer, trying not to draw attention to myself. I pounce, wrapping my left arm around there middle and using my right to hold a knife to their throat.

"Not again," I hear Colton say weakly. I let go of him and he turns to face me.
"You son of a bitch! You had me scared to death!" I hiss at him.
"I'm sorry, I thought I would gather some berries for breakfast," He says. As the sun is starting to rise over the horizon I see a look of hurt on his face.
"Colton, you can't search for berries in the dark! See those ones you're picking are hemlock berries, those are poisonous!" I tell him, "For the love of God tell me you didn't eat any of them."
"I didn't, I was waiting for you to wake up," He says.
"Thank God," I say as the worry washes off my face,"here let me help you find some nonpoisonous ones."
We gather a good amount and eat them with what little bread I had brought. While we eat I tell Colton about my life. Living with my big family of six until the bombing hit our neighborhood. I had been downstairs watching TV and had almost been buried alive, but a firefighter had saved me. The rest of my family had been upstairs and none survived. I had only been able to salvage one thing from the fire and it had been my mother's wedding ring. I wear it around my neck on chain because on my finger is too risky. Colton then tells me his story. How he lived with his mom who was a CEK and slowly watched her become insane. Then, he had left her and traveled all the way to the nearest colony, which was Phoenix.

We travel the rest of the way in silence. I wonder, will I become as crazy as Colton's mom? I hope I won't. How long will that take? Could it be years? months? days? I just have to keep fighting. The sun is just starting to set when I see the tops of ruined buildings.
"We're here," I sigh in relief, as we come across our first building.
