Epilogue: If You Love Me And Want Me, Then Marry Me
"Hey, you'd never believe it ever happened, would you?" He smiled, intertwining his fingers with hers. A warm glow started up in his chest as he held on, and he decided he'd never let go for as long as he lived. This is the way it should be, he though to himself, looking down at her bright blue eyes.
Deva smiled too, but there was pain in that smile. "Julian..." she looked down at their hands, then back up at him, their eyes locking. Her grip on his hand tightened a bit, and without warning a tear spilled from her eyes. Frustrated, Deva wiped them away, all the while Julian watched, unsure of what to say. It took her a while to speak.
"Julian, I just want to say right out that if you love me and want me - only me and no one else - then marry me." The words sent Julian into a shock, and he just stared at her. Deva stared back, looking, well, devastated, before turning to look back down at their intertwined hands. "It's just... I hate being left alone. By you. Being abandoned. I can't deal being in a relationship with you if it means you can leave at any given ti-"
"Deva?" Julian said, putting a finger to her lips and silencing her. "Did you know that when you're nervous, you talk too much?" That got an instant blush from her, but when Deva tried to turn away from Julian, he held her face between his hands. "First thing's first: shouldn't I be the one to propose?" Again, a big blush from Deva, who was fidgeting with the hand Julian didn't hold. "Second of all: why would I abandon you?"
Deva opened her mouth to speak but Julian stopped her when he knelt down on one knee, still holding her hands. "I may not have a ring at the moment, but Devana Romano, will you marry me?" A smile lit up her worried features, and Julian knew the answer before she even spoke it.
"Yes. I will. Oh, God, I'm going to marry you..." she looked shocked, but Julian was plain happy, standing up then and bring Deva into a whooping hug that lifted her off her feet. After that, he kissed her as only a happy man would, one who'd finally gotten the girl and overcome his problems. Though, his problems were more than just the average ones, if you thought about the ten zombies they'd had to kill the day before.
After everything that had happened, Deva and Julian ended up making the trek all the way to civilization, no ambulance picking them up or zombies attacking them midway. They were both really free. It took them about a day to find civilization, and after that came transportation. They'd both decided to go to Michael's dojo first; might as well give everyone the news that their master had been taken down by zombies, sad as it was.
When they'd arrived, Julian saw for the first time how much of a "master" Deva had become herself. Everyone in the Dojo kowtowed to her, and when she called for a meeting with all those who lived at the Dojo, they followed her orders.
Once everyone was in the room, Deva relayed her message, saying how the "party" they'd been invited to was a set-up, and that only she and Julian had survived. She told the men and women of the Dojo that Michael had died while fighting those who'd ambushed them - an easier term for the zombies - and that he'd died an honorable death. For some reason, that brought smiles - though mixed with tears - to their eyes.
And then someone, when Deva had finished with her speech, had stood up and announced that Michael had written in his will that if anything was to ever happen to him, the Dojo and his students would belong to her. To Deva. This news, of curse, brought tears to Deva's eyes, but it also brought a sense of guilt, and not before long, she was hiding in her room, refusing to speak to the students.
"Hey, Deva, lighten up," Julian whispered, walking into the room and sitting beside her on the bed. She sighed, running a hand through her hair, and Julian, unable to resist, brought his arms around her and pulled her up against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder. "I can get used to this," he whispered, causing Deva to shiver.
"Julian-"
"Why don't you accept that Michael gave you all this? You deserve it. You guys were... close..."
"No, Julian, not like that. We were friends." Julian blinked. All this time... all this time he'd thought of Michael as some sort of obstacle between him and Deva, and he turns out to be a friend? "He took me in when someone decided to leave me-"
"I am forever sorry for that was the biggest mistake of my life-" he murmured, sending kisses down her neck. Deva shivered, laughing a little.
"Stop it! Anyway, he took me in, trained me. He even helped me learn to control the virus. He helped me out so much, yet I could only repay him with death." At that, tears began to well up in her eyes again, and Julian had to dab at them with a Kleenex, which annoyed Deva a bit.
"Don't beat yourself over this. He died protecting you. He made the choice, and that's because he could gain your trust and you him. That's what you gave him. Now make him proud and keep the Dojo. Keep it running. I'll help out too." It took a moment for Deva to nod her head, and when she did, Julian kissed the side of her head, then drew her lips to his, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Now, why don't you pay me back for all those zombie's I've killed?"
Deva stared at him, before narrowing her eyes and then nipping at his lips. "Not yet, lover boy. We gotta start running a Dojo!"
The news spread fast, and soon everyone was celebrating, and not just because of Deva's new status as master, but because of the fact that she was getting married.
They had their wedding in the summer at the Dojo, students and everyone invited. One year later, Deva became pregnant. The baby was a girl. When the girl was born, she was born with an Itch.
