Kie sniffled as she lay in the grass watching the clouds drift, thinking of all the times she did this with Sarah. She was sorry she'd called the police on Sarah's party and missed out on the last year with her best friend. She was sorry she had made such a big deal about her and John B getting together because they were obviously meant to be together. She liked Pope enough, but she didn't see that with him. So much for paradise on Earth, because this sure as hell doesn't feel like it.

"Kiara honey, someone's here to see you!" Her mom's voice came in her direction. Who would come to her house right now? She knew that JJ was down at the sheriff's office and Pope was out trying to get another chance at his scholarship interview.

"Send them out here!" she sat up to shake the grass out of her hair before walking to the lawn chairs. She heard the door slide open and turned towards it. "Topper, what the hell are you doing here?"

"Just hear me out, okay?" Topper pulled out a chair and sat across from Kie. "I know you don't like me, but I need your help."

"You want my help? Forget it, you have to go."

"Oh, come on, is that really so hard to believe? I don't understand why you hate me so much."

Kie sighed. She didn't hate Topper. And it wasn't even his fault that she didn't like him, but she couldn't tell him that. "You're a kook."

"So are you."

Kie began to protest.

"Face it, Kie, you're a kook whether you like it or not. Hanging out with those pogue boys won't change that." Topper glanced at the distressed look on Kie's face. "Don't you remember the good times we had, when you were really one of us?"

"Topper, I really don't want to talk to you right now." Kie crossed her arms and sat back in the chair.

"Look, I'm sorry about what happened that night on the beach. I could've killed John B, and I don't think I would've ever forgiven myself for that. I was drunk and I know that's no excuse, but I wasn't thinking straight. I just knew I loved Sarah and I thought I was protecting her."

Kie started tearing up again, at the thought of John B and Sarah. "What do you want from me?"

Topper sighed. "There are cops all around the Camerons' house so I can't get in to talk to anyone there, and Kelce is off to Sweden with his parents. Trust me, I wouldn't be here if I didn't have to."

"Why are you here?"

"Kie, I don't think Sarah and John B are dead."

She sat up. "As much as I want to believe that, I don't know how that's true."

"I know its been 3 days and there's been no sign of them, but that's the thing. They haven't even found their bodies or the boat. I really don't think they're dead, but I think if we don't find them soon they will be. You know how much I loved Sarah, hell, I still do. But I can't let her die even if she chose to run off with him. Please, Kie, just help me find them."

Kie thought about what Topper was saying, and she almost felt bad for him. The girl he was so in love with ran away with another guy. Of course he thought Sarah was still alive. She wanted to believe him, but she didn't. For some reason, she thought back to her middle school days when she and Sarah swooned over Topper and would give anything to even talk to him.

What if he is right? She had to see if they might be alive, fighting for their lives out there. Besides, her parents would probably be happy if she hung out with someone they liked.

"Okay, what's your plan?"
