It’s hard to live when you know you’re supposed to be dead.
My hair lay in tangles as I sit up in my bed groggily. My plain room was spinning, my nightmares making me drowsy. The white walls seemed to close in on me and all of the wooden furniture seems to be shouting his name.
The Firm, in Richmond, has been my training center for the past three and a half years. I have accepted to join the NYC experiment. The job appeals to me because that is what my mother had done.
What I am pained to think about is the fact that I didn’t die. David’s intentions were to put me to sleep long enough, that nobody would know that I wasn’t dead. How he put me to sleep was by a sleeping serum, hidden inside of the bullet. What killed me more was the fact that when Tobias was releasing my ashes-they weren't mine.
They promised me that before I leave, I would get to see Tobias. But, I know him. He will never listen to these people, after what they did.
I plan on asking him to come with me. Then we can be together again. I hope I won't over whelm him. I don't want him shocked; yet I don't want him to be overjoyed. Each option runs through my mind, but one never winning the race.
"Beatrice." Hugo whispers, knocking on the door to my apartment. I get up from my bed and open the door. Hugo, the assistant manager, is standing there. His messy red hair and green eyes make him look like a leprechaun in his green polo shirt.
"IT’S TRIS!” I shout in his face. Ever since I met him I had to tell him that. “Hugo, what is it?" I groan. He fiddles with his glasses.
"What?" I repeat.
Hugo clears his throat. "We have a visitor."
Who could be here for me, I think. "One second." I slam the door in his face and run over to my dresser, to pull my hair in a ponytail. Nowadays, I have longer hair like I used to. Deciding I like my black leather pants and jacket with red tank, I open the door again and sprint down the hallway waking people up. I know who I want it to be, but that’s not possible.
My footsteps pound down the stairs, each step closer to my visitor. I feel a rush of adrenaline as I get closer and closer.
As I reach the bottom step, and find myself in the cabin-like lobby. It has the fire going, and smells of breakfast. I my eyes search the lobby for the person I know isn’t there.
Standing at the door is a man, about twenty-one, with dark brown hair, and persistent dark, blue eyes. His face so familiar, yet, it can’t be.
My heart pounds faster and harder in my chest. My breathing is uncontrollable. I manage to speak to him, my words choking out.
“Tobias!”
