The light streamed through the trees in the South Faron woods as Link sat by the fire he had built. He could hear Midna humming nearby. He couldn't place the tune, but she had hummed it before and he found it quite beautiful and relaxing.
"What's that you're humming?" He asked her.
"It's an old song of my People, Link. Before Zant came, we were happy, you know? We sang songs of the stars and the beautiful things that I'm afraid they can never see again. We were peaceful people living peaceful lives, and all was good."
Link stared down at his plate of carrots and rabbits meat. He was sad for Midna. She had lost everything and yet she clung to the one thing she had left, their quest to save Hyrule. He wondered what it must be like to try and save one world while yours remains trapped and there's nothing you can do about it. He knew how she cried at night, back when she first left. Her whimpers echoed throughout the forest and the animals felt her sorrow alongside her. She thought that she was cowardly for leaving them, he thought that she was brave for having hope that she could ever return.
Midna took Link in when he was transformed into a wolf for the first time. Alone, and confused. She couldn't just leave him alone. So she joined him, and they've been together ever since. She was rather fond of the boy from the beginning, and she always saw potential in him. But she never thought that he could make her feel the way that he did. She knew that he would never feel the same way, she was merely an imp, as far as he knew, and that would never be enough for a hero boy like him. He deserved a princess. Princess Zelda, or that zora girl. Midna sighed. Why couldn't just one thing be easy?
"Aren't you going to eat?" Link asked her, gesturing towards the half-eaten rabbit on the large stone by the fire.
"I'm not hungry." She muttered moodily, staring into the spring nearby.
Suddenly, she stood up.
"I'm going for a walk" she said.
Link looked at her worriedly.
"Alright, but Midna, be careful out there. It's getting dark."
She nodded in response and set out into the woods.
