Alchemy is difficult, but it's the complexity that pushes me to do better in this subject. I sit with my nose in the book and 7 parchment papers around me. The table is loaded with all the Alchemy books. I never truly fancied this subject, but a girl has to do all the things to uncover all there is to uncover during such vexatious times.
Hogwarts isn't Hogwarts anymore. There are frequent attacks on the castle, even with all the protective spells. Someone on the inside is assisting You Know Who in sending all the Death Eaters to the castle. A few weeks back, the charred body of a fourth-year old Hufflepuff girl was discovered on the third-floor corridor. No one knows who did it, but the traces of a death eater were found near the body.
The Battle is inevitable and it is so near that if I extend my hand, I could probably feel it. The Order has taken upon itself to look after the protection of the students because the Ministry has withdrawn from all spheres of the wizarding community. The Minister of Magic is a pawn of the Dark Lord. The media and the reporters are corrupt and those who stand up against the Dark Lord and report the true scenario, end up missing in a couple of hours. The wizarding world had changed. And it was changing for the worse.
It was close to two in the morning when I finally finished my studies. There was no one in the library anymore, not even the librarian. Students and teachers preferred staying in their rooms after ten o'clock at night. Except for a few teachers and students, who had taken upon themselves, the task of keeping the school safe. They kept watch of the school at all times and worked in shifts of 6 hours each.
I quickly collected my books and parchments and proceeded towards the exit, muttering a locking spell on the library door. I had my wand at ready, just in case things were to go south. I was struggling with the books, parchment, and wand, and just when I was about to mutter a levitation charm on the books, my body collided with a hard chest. All the books went crashing down, on the floor, their sound reverberating through the corridor and making sure that people on that floor were scared out of their skins, for a moment.
However, I was still in the arms of the person with whom I collided. It took me a moment to get back my wits and when I did, I pushed back hard and pointed my wand at the person, ready to attack. But to my surprise, the owner of the hard chest was Malfoy. He was standing there, with his pale hair, cool as a cucumber, smirking at me.
The audacity of that boy!
"You know, for the smartest witch of our age, you are not so smart." He smirked again, coming closer to me, taking tentative steps and making sure I don't put him under a hex.
"You could have easily used a levitating charm you are so good at." He said as he took one more step closer to me.
"Or you could have called that Weasel boyfriend of yours to help you with all the lifting." He continued. "He could at least prove himself worthy in this sphere, if not anywhere else. After all, your endeavors in the broom closet are no mystery." He finished as he took the final step and stood at less than an arm's distance from me.
He was so close that I could breathe his cinnamon breath. I hadn't realized that I was holding my breath until Malfoy lightly touched me on my arm.
"You forgot to breathe." He said, but this time, with a hint of sincerity in his voice.
I discerned how close we were standing and tried to put some distance between us, but my open shoelace decided to put itself to use at the exact moment, making me trip and crash into Malfoy's arm. He held me close to him and I did not try to put distance between us. This felt good. This felt like something I had never experienced and I wanted more.
"You really can't stay away from me, can you?" He asked after a while, laughter lacing his voice.
I pushed him away with all I had, making him stumble, but he regained his balance quickly. He laughed lightly and shook his head at my immature behavior.
"Let's get your books." He said, bending down to pick up my abandoned books.
"Why are you helping me?" I asked.
He and I both knew that this question was not only meant for this situation but also the greater state of affairs. He looked up at me from where he was crouching down as if trying to understand my reason for asking this question. He finally shook his head again and said:
"You know, I'm not the enemy, Granger." He said as he got up with all my books in his arms.
I quickly muttered a levitating charm and all the books started slowly gliding in the air, towards my room. I was the Head Girl and therefore, the teachers thought it fit for me to have a separate room.
"I just mean..that..I mean.." I tried to speak, but those steel grey eyes were messing with my brain.
I could take no more, I quickly said good night and hurried past him, without looking at him again. I rushed to my room and slammed it shut, collapsing against it.
What's happening with you Granger?
You were never like this. A boy could never do this to you. Especially not Malfoy!
Then why did I feel what I felt today? What changed?
I had all these questions coursing through my brain as I changed and got in bed. The last thing on my mind being the feel of Malfoy's arms around me.

At the same time, at the same spot as their impromptu rendezvous, stood Malfoy, reading the thoughts of Hermione Granger, the brightest witch of their age, with his heart beating loudly as one thought kept circling his mind:
"She felt it too."
