I dusted off the invisible dirt on my suit before taking a deep breathe and preparing to walk into the police station. I feel like a teenager about to go into their first job.
As I walked into the police station, the last thing I expected to see were those blue eyes. God dammit. Of all the places to work she has to work here doesn't she. God dammit. She glanced up from her work, noticing that someone had walked in. She stood up and extended her hand. Of course she had to work here. Of course. At this point god may as well go and just fuck me in the ass.
"Hi, you must be the new Assistant District Attorney. I'm Detective Riley Harper," She gave me that charming smile, the one that had me swooning the first time I saw it.
"I know who you are, I'm Alex, Alex Waters," I shook her extended hand, and watched a look of shook cover her face for a split second.
"For real?" She asked, and I nodded.
"Well then it's nice to see you again Alex. I'm the head detective here, so if you have any case questions you can come to me and most of the time I'll be here," She said, before pointing to the two guys at desks in the corner, "They're the other cops, and right now they're doing the paperwork of our last case. And then at the big desk up front is normally where the Sheriff sits, but he doesn't get in until 12,"
At least she was being civil and not a total bitch.
I stood there for a minute awkwardly before finally asking "Okay, so where would I sit?"
"Lucky you, you get a little office. It's down the hall and is the second door on the right," She said, pointing to the hallway.
"Okay, thank you,"
"No problem,"
I took the small amount of things I had down the hall, going to second door on the right. I grabbed the doorknob, trying to get it open. Locked.
"Uh Riley?" I called, no response.
I walked back into the main room. I looked for her, and there she was at her desk with her classic black Beats on. God she looks exactly the same.
I took a good look at her. She still had the same look about her that she did in high school. Her blue eyes still had that light in them, her brown hair still had the natural waves, her skin still had that slight tan. She looked more muscular now, I noticed that when she stood up to shake my hand. Her black jeans and police button down helped with that.
I tapped her shoulder and she glanced up, putting her headphones around her neck when she noticed it was me.
"What's up?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.
"The door's locked,"
"Oh shit that's my bad, here lemme grab the keys for you,"
"Still got a sailors mouth Harper?" I joked, and she glanced at me with a small smile.
"Just a little, definitely not as bad as when we were in high school,"
I laughed. She went and grabbed the keys from the Sheriff's desk. She spun the keys around on her finger before handing them to me.
This time I got the door unlocked and went inside the small office. It was nothing fancy, just a desk with two chairs in front of it. I organized my stuff and sat there. This was nice. I didn't have much to the first day besides set everything up and put my microsoft account on the computer. I organized the filing cabinets and put some picture frames on the desk.
I couldn't believe that I moved to some town in the middle of Pennsylvania and Riley just so happens to work there. Just my luck I guess. She always talked about finding a way out of Jersey, and I guess she found it. Part of me misses high school, where her and I would go on dates to the small skating rink and get pizza. The innocence of it all, but that's never coming back. I was always the smart one between the two of us, but part of me wondered if I was truly stupid for letting her go. But none of that mattered now, we were both happy with our separate lives and didn't need each other. And I plan to keep it that way. It had been 4 years of keeping my distance, I could make it a whole lot longer.
Somebody knocked on the door, three taps before opening it.
"Hey Alex, you wanna take a lunch break? I'll show you around," Riley offered peaking her head through the door.
"Sure," Okay maybe keeping my distance would be harder than I thought.
