"Babe, I'm not lending you anything until you tell me why?"
"Babe! Don't worry, I'll return it next week. I promise."
Bebay would not easily yield. "But why? You're chipping off my savings. I at least have the right to know."
Alie felt like she was shrinking. She did not want to tell her bestfriend yet because she wanted to take these steps on her own. What if he ended up not coming? It would be most embarrassing on her part.
"If I tell you, I'm afraid it might end up not happening. You know that thing when you get so hyped up about something but it ends up not happening."
"Okay, okay, I understand," she took out her wallet and handed Alie a yellow bill.
"Thanks, Babe."
"I love you so I'm not exacting interest. Wait, aren't we going this way?" Bebay pointed to their morning detour.
Alie could not hide her smile. "Don't worry, there's no need to." She did not have to see him this early in the morning because she was going over to his house in the afternoon anyway.
"Are you letting him go? Babe, you are now liberated!"
"What are you talking about?"
This part of the school - the shorter and practical route to their buildings - had a proper walkway. "Ughs, it really does smell!" Bebay exclaimed through her pinched nose.
"Told you." Apparently, there was a garbage repository at the other side of the wall. Especially on Fridays when it was time for garbage collection later in the day, they would likely be covering their noses as they walked here.
On Fridays, their History Class was right before lunch. Mr. Patricio's voice was like a dull bee buzzing. Especially when he was unsure of what he was saying. Of course. Burgundy knew well when he was simply making guesses or stating his measly sentiments. His tone changed. And it was obvious because he naturally sounded firm and angry.
After hearing of Jude doing impressively in the Math test, he was incredulous. The boy obviously cheated. How else could he have done it. Mrs. Lu mentioned Jude happened to have sat next to Luke who was a genius. And they even had the same score. Wasn't that enough of an evidence?
If Mr. Patricio found out that Jude finished earlier than Luke the Genius, how astonished would he be?
But of course, this fact did not refute the possibility that Jude indeed cheated. There are many ways to skin a cat after all.
"Okay, let's have a quiz."
Mr. Patricio suddenly had the whim to have an assessment quiz that day, just to appease himself. Some teachers are benevolent. Some are just so righfully worth cursing to death.
All mouths fell open, especially those who were not listening.
Alie was as surprised. She did not catch everything. Would she fail this test too?
"Now, put away your books."
Even though they were elites, they weren't gods. They could do nothing against the unpredictability in the person of Mr. Patricio. Many of them flunked it. But Mr. Patricio had one goal here. That was to prove that Jude was nothing but a delusional moron.
Jude indeed got nearly zero. But even Mr. Patricio who was in his late forties could also be truly stupid. At the end of the day, how could a test score prove anything?
Alie was euphoric. She got 9 out of 10. It was her own sort of joy.
And there was more to look forward to. Alie walked along with Jude to the nearby row of restos.
