"wei ying!!!" wangji's shrill voice echoed off the clifftops as he screamed, Blood pouring out of his deeply wounded arm. he watched in horror as wei wuxian quickly disappeared from his sight, plummeting do his miserable death.
wangji blinked his eyes in disbelief. water filling them rapidly. he fell to his knees, his arm now completely numb and his head dizzy from the blood loss. he dropped bichen by his side as he body slumped forward. he felt his body shake as he felt tears run down his chiseled cheekbones for the first time in his life. he hung his head, completely crestfallen.
after hours of sitting there on the cliff edge, he felt his body sway and his vision go blurry and then black. he collapsed against the red-brown rock, blood soaking through his white sleeve.
xichen was walking, examining the damage left behind in nightless city. he sighed regretfully before shifting his gaze to a white figure laying by the edge of the cliff. he ran over quickly noticing it was his younger brother, who had already lost way too much blood by now.
he knelt down next to the unconscious boy and shook his shoulder vigorously. "Wangji?! Wangji can you hear me?!" xichen called out several times but wangji was out cold. xichen carefully took the younger in his arms and carried him back down the cliff and out of the nightless city.
he loaded a boat setting course for cloud recesses which was currently being re-built. he layed wangji on the deck, bringing his brother in his lap and smoothing his long hair with his trembling hands. "it's going to be okay wangji..." xichen whispered to the limp boy in his arms.
wangji woke up with a start sitting up abruptly. xichen was by his side instantly, his hand placed firmly on his back. "slow down." xichen spoke softly. wangji looked up at his brother, obvious distress on his face. "how are you feeling? do you feel dizzy? do you feel sick? how's your arm?" "Lan Huan." wangji interrupted. "I am fine. don't worry so much." wangji attempted to stand but was stopped by xichen. "xichen. what are you doing?" "wangji, you must rest, take some time for yourself." xivhen hesitantly put a hand on wangji's shoulder.
wangji turned his head to the side for a moment before facing his brother. "don't be ridiculous, I have to go see clan leader." wangji stood up with a blank expression and walked out of the room.
"lan wangji! you have become a disgrace to the lan clan! you are to go to the hidden cave and stay there for three years!" the clan leader was fuming while he screamed at a kneeling wangji.
wangji held a rod up with his arms bent for the next four hours as a punishment before he would be banished to the cave. as wangji knelt he couldn't help but think of wuxian. his poor etiquette, his bad habits, the way he always spilled alcohol down his chin and on to his robes when drinking. wangji found himself smile slightly at the memories. he thought of his big toothy grin and that high pitched giggle of his. He missed him so much. wangji had endured every type of pain imaginable, from beatings to sword lashes but nothing hurt worse than watching wuxian let go of his arm and fall from that cliff. wangji squeezed his eyes shut trying to force a poker face. despite his attempt, nothing could stop the rush of hot tears to his narrow eyes.
he kept his posture as he held up the rod, his face straining. "do not cry lan zhan. you are a man, you are strong, stop it." he said to himself, his eyes closed tight.
"lan zhan! " a sudden voice called to him. a painfully familiar voice. wangji twitched.
"lan zhan! come on! come see the rabbits with me!" the enthusiastic tone echoed in wangjis ears. he decided to open his eyes. he froze. he was there. he was standing just a few feet away.
"wei ying..." wangji reached his hand out his fingers trembling. "come over here lan zhan." wuxian said with a grin. wangji put down the rod and stood up, his legs shaking. he glided across the pavement towards a very excited wei ying. he stood inches from him he could almost hear him breathing. suddenly, wuxian stepped an inch closer and placed his hand on wangji's cheek.
