Chapter 5

It was cold in the woods up by the mine entrance, the biting wind making Ali pull her jacket a little tighter around herself as she slammed the back hatch of her Jeep closed, shouldering her duffel of weaponry as Sam watched her.

"I have to ask, why the brown Jeep?" He frowned, shoving his hands in his pockets as Dean opened up the trunk of the Impala behind him.

"It's not brown, its Sahara." Ali insisted with a grin, "And it's iconic – it's Lorelai Gilmore's car." At his blank expression she laughed and rolled her eyes; "From Gilmore Girls? No?" She snorted at his lack of recognition as she shook her head and strode to join Dean where he was stood at the trunk of the Imapla. "This is like the Holy Grail of weapon stashes." She hummed in appreciation as the older brother propped open the hidden compartment to unveil the arsenal within, laying her own duffel bag on the ground by the back wheel.

"So, what do we need to fight these things?" Sam frowned as he joined her, his hand momentarily hovering over his favourite shotgun.

"Iron is the usual weapon of choice." Ali murmured, bending to pull a crowbar from her bag; "But I don't know... I'm still not certain this is entirely Fae, it just doesn't quite fit."

"Well, we'll know once we're in there." Dean muttered, grabbing his own bar and tucking it under his arm as Sam handed him a flashlight.

"Just... Tread carefully, we don't know if the Tommyknockers are the only thing down there – if they're there at all."

"They'd better be, after the story you spun over those rings." Sam muttered, not quite having forgiven her for the giggling, lovesick act she'd put on in the pawn shop.

"You loved it, babe." She laughed, patting her pocket the check the gold rings were still there as Dean slammed the trunk shut with a roll of his eyes.

"Come on kids, lets go get ourselves a lump of coal."

It wasn't difficult to tell where the schoolkids had pulled back the rotten boards that blocked the entrance to the disused mine, what was difficult was getting Sam and Dean to squeeze after Ali through the gap. Once they were inside though, it was a different cold that seeped into her bones. An old cold, the chill of stone and air that hadn't been disturbed by breeze or breath in some time.

Casting her torch over the walls, she watched the beam of light get swallowed up by the darkness of the tunnel that gradually sloped downwards ahead of them, a soundtrack of steady dripping sending a shiver running through her body.

"You okay?" Sam breathed as he ducked to avoid hitting his head off the wooden beams that supported the ceiling.

"Yeah, lets get looking." She breathed, stepping forward into the darkness.
