Chapter 11
After the hunt at Lake George, things changed.
Of course, they still went their separate ways. The next morning, the Wrangler headed East whilst the Impala drove West. Sam didn't ask Ali to stay, nor did she offer to.
Still, there was a closeness now that there hadn't been before. She hadn't slipped away at first light, instead content to lay with her head pillowed on his firm chest, listening to his steady breathing as he trailed his fingers up and down the curve of her spine.
She had shared a coffee with the two brothers before they parted ways, recounting her underwater struggle with the Kelpie the day before with the appropriate theatrical embellishments. Though she failed to mention the way her heart had clenched with the newfound knowledge that Sam cared for her, and the equally terrifying knowledge that she cared for him.
She had let Sam walk her to her car. She had smiled at the way he had opened the driver's side door for her, wondering just how gentlemanly he might be if they had met outside of this world of monsters. What it would be like if they had done something as desperately mundane as a date. Would he have pulled her chair out for her at dinner? Would he offer her his jacket if she got cold? Somehow, she knew the answers to those questions already.
She had let him draw her into his strong arms and kiss her goodbye. She had wrapped her own arms around his neck, standing on her toes to return the gentle kiss. She had smiled into his lips as they exchanged the whispered 'See you' that they always seemed to part with, not quite a goodbye, not quite a promise that they would see each other again. It was enough though, for what they were. They could enjoy what they had, without thinking about what they could lose.
Ali knew it couldn't end well, though. She was reminded of that fact each morning she tore a fresh page from the diary in her glove compartment, but she couldn't quite make herself let go of Sam Winchester. Not yet anyway.
That was becoming more evident as she found herself unable to ignore thinking about him as she once had. The texts they had started exchanging didn't help either. It had started small, looking for advice on hunts, but nearly six months later, she was quickly finding herself checking her phone each time she pulled over on a drive, hoping to hear from him, or passing on things she had heard on the road.
