It's the start of September and the leaves of trees are already changing into warm tones as the temperature starts to drop. It wasn't freezing just yet, but short-sleeved shirts are now out of the picture. The orange sun hung low in the sky, signalling the start of the oncoming sunset.
I am sitting on a horizontal log nearing the edge of a cliff side, overlooking the town that I grew up in. From this vantage point I could see two hills and three or four rows of houses at the far side of the road. The gold and orange trees mixed in nicely with the assortment of colors.
It was a picturesque view.
The only thing that was more beautiful than the astonishing scene presented before me was my girlfriend, Casey Gardner. She sat next to me on the log, her lips pressed into a straight line as she took in the stunning landscape. I loved watching her eyes light up as we shared the view.
I didn't even have to focus my attention on her face; her eyes were occasionally on my own. My peripheral vision would allow me to watch her every move; the way she had to brush her hair out of her face whenever the wind blew a little too hard, the way the corners of her lips tugged up into a smile every so often, or how her face scrunched up whenever she laughed.
"It's beautiful." Casey whispers, as if she was afraid that if she spoke too loud, the scene in front of her would unravel, "Just like you."
"Stop it." I giggle, playfully shoving at her shoulder. She only responds with a quick staccato laugh, propping her foot up on the log so she can rest her arms on one knee.
I take a moment to admire her attire. Casey was sporting a white tank-top with roughed up jeans, her pants cuffed an inch above her black boots. I don't know why she was wearing that type of clothing in weather like this, but our shared body heat was enough to warm an entire room.
"So..." I start, intertwining my fingers as I turn to look at her, "-how's, uh... life?"
"Life?" Casey repeats, glancing between me and the scenery. "Life is alright. As normal as it can get, anyway. Elsa and Dad are still working on their relationship, and I hear that Sam and Paige are officially together."
"Well, good for them." I reply, sending Casey a warm smile. She returns the sweet gesture, tilting her head to the side, "What about you? What's up with your life?"
"Actually, not that much. As you said, as normal as it can get. I'm still having to take care of my siblings 24/7 because my mother left to go on another one of her "trips" again. Thankfully, my grandmother took over this weekend so I can have a break." I sigh, tugging at the sleeves of my jacket, "Soon, I'm going to send out some job applications so I can begin to support my family financially because, newsflash, my parents don't care."
Casey's brow crinkled and I could see the cogs slowly turning in her mind. It still confused me that all of this stuff with my parents was something that she still couldn't fathom.
"Iz- God, that sucks." Casey replied, moving so her body was facing toward me, "It makes me feel sick knowing that your parents force you to do all of the work. Like, at your age, you should be able to go to parties and stay out really late with friends instead of making sure all of your siblings have had dinner that night."
