your hands gliding along the water, slowly. feeling a shiver here and there from the array of plants and critters in the lake. you felt a sudden shift in the boat and looked the opposite direction to see emerson sitting down.

you then looked straight ahead, at the pine trees in front of you. fog on the tips of them as if it were a blanket. you then looked down at the water, to where you recoiled your hand and placed it into your lap.

you felt a hand on yours, as you looked at emerson. "hey.." he said, studying you carefully. losing your train of thought, you snapped back into reality and glanced at him. "h-hey.." you reciprocated.

"you look pale," he started. "are you alright?" gazing back out onto the water, you said; "yeah, just fine." not taking your eyes off of the sight in front of you, emerson raised his hand and slightly turned your head towards him.

"look at me." he said blankly, retracting his hand. your pupils moved to meet his. "you are not okay, look, i can see it in your eyes, you just look, numb."

you raised your hang to brush the loosely strands of hair out of his face. at the sight of the touch, he eased up a bit. you gave a weak smile and brought your hand back to your lap, where you placed it with the other in your crimson hoodie pockets.

he took his arm and placed it around your shoulder, you placed your head onto his shoulder as you once again disappeared into your own mind.

you thought of many things. many of which would concern others. many "what if's" and other things that couldn't happen, but what if they did. gazing out onto the lake and placing your hand back into the water, emerson took off his leather jacket and wrapped it around you.

the smell of smoke filled your nose. you snapped back once again, "h-huh?" "you were shivering," he said with a worried tone. "o-oh, alright." you said.

"look, i need to ask you something." he asked after a long silence. you brought your head to meet his and tilted it slightly in response. "are you ignoring me on purpose?" that question made your stomach churn. you didn't realize until he had said it- that you were affecting him.
