After dinner, and after helping with the dishes - "For goodness sake, Brian!" Valerie had cried. "You've already done so much for us!" - Brian headed out, another container filled with leftovers tucked beneath his arm - again which he said he wouldn't be sharing. "Thanks again, for everything," he said.
"Oh Dear, thank you for everything!" gushed Valerie.
"I'll see you Friday night," Brian said to Lettie.
"Yes, yes you will. See you then."
"Got a hot date?" Chip asked after Brian left - well, when he was barely out the door.
"You sound like Tina."
"Well do you?"
"No! We're going to a '50s-themed party at his uni."
"Oh." Chip scrunched up his nose. "Sounds boring."
"Well I'm excited."
"Sure you are, you're going with Brian."
"Oh, piss off!" Lettie swatted at him.
"I think he's just the sweetest," put in Valerie. "I definitely approve if you date him."
"Oh, not you too, Mum."

The night had arrived - it was time to turn back the clock a couple of decades! '50s night was here!
Lettie was just adding the finishing touches to her lipstick when the doorbell rang.
"Wow - you look, wow..." was all Brian could say when she opened the door. She was dressed in a bright pink dress with matching gloves and shoes. The pink looked brilliant with her bright red hair.
"Thanks. This is an old dress of Mum's from when she was about our age in the '50s. I added some designs and changed it up a little to suit myself more. These shoes are going to kill my feet though, I just know it." She kicked up one of her high heels. Then she took in his appearance. "And don't you look very dapper."
"Yeah, thanks..." He was dressed in a suit and tie with suspenders. "Not sure how '50s it is, though. And, I wanted to get your opinion: hat or no hat?" He held up a fedora.
"Extra dapper! I like that hat."
"Brilliant. It can cover my not-so-'50s hair."
"'Not-so-'50s but still lovely hair," she said.
"Thanks." He did what he usually did, something she had noticed: closed his eyes, bowed his head a little, and chuckled. She was beginning to love that little gesture of his. "Are you all ready to go?" he asked.
"Yes!"
"Well then, in that case-" He held out his arm. "Madam."
She giggled. "What a perfect gentleman. Thank you, kind Sir."
He escorted her out to their ride: Roger had loaned them the van so Brian could drive them to his university, Imperial College.
When they arrived, the classroom was like a time machine - the event planners had gone all out with the decorations, and the outfits were positively stunning! The room was full of inspiration for a fashion designer, that was for sure!
Classic tunes from the decade filled the room, and dancing was in full swing. There were snacks and drinks available, as well as the opportunity for a photograph.
"This is brilliant!" she cried.
"I agree."
They wandered around, taking in everything.
