Dragons have always been feared and reviled by humans since the ancient of times. Many of their tales speak of the glory of vanquishing dragons, of removing the earth from the 'scourge' of dragons. But if these stories were told as they were, and from the dragon's view, they would be different. They would tell the story of a race of creatures trying to survive in a harsh, cruel world. A world that seems unforgiving of moments of kindness or love, a world where your only aim was to survive.

The problem with starting this story is having to introduce myself. You see, I have had many names. I have been called the 'Offspring of lightning and death', 'Viking bane', 'Terror of the skies' or even a couple of other not-so-nice names I will not go into. But my first ever name was the one my mother gave me, which translates to the ancient Norse Myrkr. This in English means darkness. For a Night Fury, a dragon of my tribe, is a creature that thrives in darkness. It is our friend and ally. We are taught that it hides us so that we can escape our foes. We of all dragons can hunt the best in it, bouncing a special sound of objects in a special form of echolocation.

The name my mother gave me would be very hard to pronounce for a human unlearnt in dragonish. Dragons communicate in their own language, but most Vikings either don't pay attention or just don't want to listen to the 'strange' sounds we produce, the pops and whistles we produce. Usually they are really faint for the human ear anyway, but dragons have sensitive hearing and can easily pick them up.

Anyway I do not have a lot of memories of my mother, mainly because I did not get to spend a much time with her. Even then it was tough for our once proud tribe to live in peace, and having more than one night fury in the same place for only a short time is fraught with peril. She was forced to stay only until I had grown up enough to defend myself against other dragons, lest we attract too much attention and be attacked. I shall share with you most of what I remember about my younger years.
