It was on one such night when I was nearing ten that she finally told me why she had her bitter, sorrowful moods.
"Myrkr, it is about time I told you why us Night Furies have to always be in hiding, why you never got to see your father. You are old enough now for me to tell you the truth."
"Is this the reason why you are so sad sometimes?"
"Yes, it is why I sometimes become sad, thinking about the fate of our proud tribe."
"Night Furies were once as numerous as all the other dragons. We were fierce and proud warriors, with great honour. We after all are some of the best dragons for stealth, speed and accuracy, able to sneak in and take down our enemies and prey in the blink of a gnats eye.
But really that didn't matter so much back then. We were well respected by other dragons, and asked upon by many of the cheiftans for advice."
"What changed this?"
"Well it is really hard to start.......so many things went wrong....... but I'll try to tell you what happened. You see, the reign of the dragons started to crumble when the first of those raiders appeared, the Vikings. They quickly settled the islands, clearing the forests for their farms and driving away the animals we normally hunted. For a while it was fine for us as there were plenty of islands and food to go round, but then a long hard winter came, and food was scarce. A tribe of dragons decided to steal food from the Vikings to feed themselves, and the Vikings fought them to get it back. They then got enraged as saw the dragons as a threat to their animals, fighting to keep us away from their settlements, driving us from their islands. Desperate, we had to start to steal from them to survive. It became even worse when Red Death found the Viking's food to her taste and started demanding more. Soon there was a fully fledged war on out hands, Vikings and dragons fighting to the bitter end.
In a time of desperate struggles, fights broke out among us too. As us night furies were some of the most powerful and cunning of the dragons, we were seen as a threat by the more dominant species, the kings and queens of the dragon world. While the kinder ones let us stay in their safe-havens, the nastier ones tried to exterminate us. We were hunted by dragons and Vikings alike, especially when the latter saw our amazing skills and abilities.
Ever since, our kind has been on the run, never staying in one place too long, lest we die. We are lucky stealth is one of our strong points. But even so, we try to protect other dragons from the Vikings and the tyranny of the dragon leaders. We play as the fast, accurate dive-bombers, taking out the Viking's attack weapons like the catapults. One day we may reclaim our islands for ourselves and drive these invaders away"
