The time spent with Todoroki was priceless to Izuku. It had been a long time since he felt so happy, maybe the last time was before Bakugou developed his quirk and started to bully him.
Since they started hanging out, Izuku learned a lot of things about the quiet boy. Todoroki was in fact a really nice and caring boy once he let you look behind the mask he stubbornly wore around everyone, he just had a bit of difficulty to trust people but Izuku was determined to earn his trust, so in a really short time they were always together talking and laughing.
Izuku learned that Todoroki was really trustworthy and reliable, the boy showed him a lot of time: every time Izuku was in trouble or in any kind of danger, Todoroki would rush in his help showing the shorter boy how much he actually cared for him.
But as expected, it didn't last long.
At first it was just nothing more than a few little cough from time to time accompanied by the feeling of a dry throat; drinking a bit of water was enough to ease the discomfort.
But then, as his heart started to rush a little more whenever Todoroki was around him or whenever he shoved him his beautiful smile, the little coughs became hard to tolerate.
It was when Izuku saw a couple of rose petals in his hand after a cough fit that he knew he was in love with his friend. He kept everything for himself, confident that he would have found the courage to confess soon enough. Unfortunately his mother found out and forced the boy to schedule a doctor appointment. It was horrible to the boy, having to listen to his mother cries after the doctor said the diagnosis."It's Hanahaki" - the doctor said blankly.
Izuku didn't need him to tell him, he already knew.
"It's not that tragic madam, we can remove the flowers and roots from your son's lungs; we just need him to accept the surgery" - he explained.
Inko's eyes sparkled with relief as the doctor explained the procedure."There are side effects though. Once the flowers are removed, the patient will forget the feelings for the loved one. There are a few cases in with the patient completely forgot of the person existence. It's really rare, but there's a chance the patient won't be able to have any feeling anymore after the surgery."
"But he will survive right?" - Inko asked the doctor anxiously. The latter nodded and the chubby woman soon looked at his son with begging eyes.
"Izuku accept the surgery, please." - she begged placing a hand over his son knee. Izuku swallowed harshly at the sight of his mother's face covered in tears."I'm sorry mum, but I don't want to." - he said taking her mother's hand in his - "I'll confess, I just have to find the right moment. It's going to be fine, I've been planning it for a while, I just need a few more days"
"But if your feelings won't be returned you'll get the surgery right?" - the woman asked holding his son's hand tighter. Izuku nodded still confident that he was going to confess and Todoroki would return his feelings.
But Izuku didn't confess right away and as time went by and and Todoroki seemed to grow distant, his symptoms worsen and his confidence quivered.Izuku's confidence shuttered completely onto pieces a month later as he stared from afar as the boy he was in love with smiled at his new girlfriend holding onto her hand.
He swallowed harshly glad that the drugs were still working.
Sighing he turned walked away, his hand clutching onto the fabric of his shirt where his heart was trying to cherish that love for the few remaining hours.
It had been 2 months and Todoroki had fallen in love with Momo leaving Izuku hopeless, heartbroken and with no other choice that get the surgery.
The wind ruffled his green locks and made him shiver from the cold as he slowly walked home.
It was unfortunate how things didn't work out well for him. He coughed up holding a hand over his mouth, he could feel the taste of his own blood in his mouth as the rose petals came up through his throat. He looked at the full red rose in his hand along with few petals, even the pure white one covered in red blood now.
