Prolouge
She wouldn't look at me. Her head stayed to the side, fire-truck red hair cascading down her shoulders. I could hear the smile in her voice.
"Matt." She looked at the ground, keeping her face hidden. Her voice stayed monotonus. "Hi."
She held up he gloved hand and waved. Her gloved fingers seemed even more slender and fragile than usual. The glove was a light mint color, worn from the years she'd worn them.
From when I gifted them to her.
I watched as she put them back in the pocket of her tan peacoat. I didn't answer her.
Why won't she look at me?
She then took her hands and began playing with her scarf. Mint colored.
Like her gloves.
I also gave her that scarf.
"Look at me." I croaked. She turned towards me. Her hand covered her face, her fingers slightly spread apart.
So she could see me. But I couldn't see her.
I walked up to her. I grabbed her free hand.
"Look. At. Me." I shouted. She sighed, and slowly took her hand down. She kept her eyes averted.
My vision blurred.
The tears fell down my face. I shook my head.
"Please. Look at me." I sobbed. She looked up at me, tears streaming down her face.
"Don't hate me." She choked out between her sobs.
I gasped.
Her eyes shone with her tears. Her irises barely showed their beautiful green.
But her pupils.
They shone black as ever.
With four holes in it.
With stitches through the holes
Buttons.
