She had been surveying the crowd of Roman demigods that had gathered in the forum, when a familiar face appeared, and Annabeth's vision tunneled.
Percy was smiling at her and the rest of the demigods from the Argo II-that sarcastic, troublemaker smile that had annoyed her for years but eventually had become endearing. His sea-green eyes were as gorgeous as she remembered. His dark hair was swept to one side, like he'd just come from a walk on the beach. He looked even better than he had six months ago--tanner and taller, leaner and more muscular.
Annabeth was too stunned to move. She felt that if she got any closer to him, all the molecules in her body might combust. She'd secretly had a crush on him since they were twelve years old. Last summer, she'd fallen for him hard. They'd been a happy couple for four months--and then he'd disappeared.
During their separation, something had happened to Annabeth's feelings. They'd grown painfully intense--like she'd been forced to withdraw from a life-saving medication. Now she wasn't sure which was more excruciating--living with that horrible absence, or being with him again.
The praetor Reyna straightened. With apparent reluctance, she turned toward Jason.
"Jason Grace, my former colleague..." She spoke the word colleague like it was a dangerous thing. "I welcome you home. And these, your friends--"
Annabeth didn't mean to, but she surged forward. Percy, who's eyes were seemingly sizing up the ship's members, as if searching for a threat, didn't notice her coming.
She tackled him in a hug, not caring what the Romans thought. Finally she had her Seaweed Brain back.
"I missed you so much," she whispered into his shirt, trying to contain her tears.
Percy stood there stiffly until she pulled away. When she did, she saw an expression she wasn't expecting: confusion.
"Uh... I-I'm sorry have we met?" He said hesitantly.
Annabeth was stunned. "Have we met? Percy, I'm Annabeth. Annabeth Chase."
"I... Yeah, not ringing any bells. Sorry," he said blatantly.
She took a step back, reminding herself that at least thirty Romans were still watching her.
Reyna chose this moment to step in, which was good, since Annabeth was at a loss for words.
"Percy arrived at camp with no memory of where he had come from or who he was. He had an orange shirt and a sword disguised as a pen. That was all."
"Yes... yes the shirt! You're telling me you didn't know where it came from? Percy, you were at camp for five years!" Annabeth said, desperate to somehow jog Percy's memory. He couldn't just forget her, could he?
"Um... camp?" He seemed as clueless as ever.
"Yes! Camp Halfblood!" She gestured to the shirt Piper had on, identical to the one he should have been wearing when he went missing. "Run by Mr. D and Chiron? With the strawberry fields and the climbing wall and the canoe lake and the Big House and the... you really don't remember anything?"
"Yeah... nothing."
She couldn't believe what she was hearing.
No, she could. She just didn't want to.
How could she have been so oblivious? Jason only got his memories back because he had rescued Hera from her prison. Who was to say that Percy would get his back too? Annabeth had known, in the back of her mind, that there was a possibility Percy wouldn't remember her. But she had told herself she was overthinking, and he couldn't just forget her like that, and had pushed the thought aside.
