Deep in the grasslands of Mobius, heard it told, lived an ancient tribe of Mice. Their fur was as gray as a rain cloud, but glistened in the bright Ray's of the sun, like a silver ring, and were as advanced as advanced could get! Legend had it that these folks live in their burrows, deep beneath the surface. But like all Legends, no one ever proved the existence of these peculiar beings, nor was there a tinge of proof to be had.... But also, like Legends, there lies the little truths...

Chapter One.... A Village in the Plains

The sun was bright and warm as the Villagers bustled about, running their errands, and supporting their families, like any other day in their lives. A young pup was seen running from stall to stall, looking excitedly at all the food, and trinkets that were held in each one, as an older Mouse struggled to keep up. "Slow down Brea!" She called, tripping over sticks, and hidden rocks. The pup looked behind her happily as her mother, out of breath, caught up. "Brea, sweetheart, what me and your father told you about running off like that?" The pup sighed, and looked to the ground. Her mother took her hand, and said gently, "I'm sorry, but it is too dangerous for you to be out and about! The burrow is much safer for you, at least until your powers develop. Now come! Your father has dinner made." Back at the burrow, the pup's father stood waiting at the door, arms crossed. The pup ran up to him, latching herself to his leg lovingly. Her father shook her head, and lifted his child into his arms. "Brea, you MUST stop sneaking off like that! You're mother and I were worried!" Her father scolded as he set her down on the straw flooring of their cozy burrow. "You're the only pup me and your mother ever had. Women are rare enough in this Village as it is, and you are going to carry on our bloodline! You can't do that if you're putting yourself in fatal positions such as leaving the village to do who knows what!" "You make it sound like we're keeping her inside for family benefit Virgal." Her mother said, annoyed. "I'm only speaking fact Olive!" The pup's father defended, "She can't defend herself, nor can she even call out for anyone so that they can defend her! She's MY blood and I will not have it spilled before I have my own soul returned to the wind that so kindly have us life." "Well the more you talk about "Me, Me, Me" the more she's going to be encouraged to leave the burrow! I get it, she's my pup as well, but don't you think we should move on from our old fashioned ways?" Her mother begged. Her father sighed, and handed the pup a plate of baked wheat seeds, salted nuts, and roasted berries. The pup took the plate, looking at the sorry excuse of a meal that she's had for almost a month strait. "It's good for you," her father began, "better than what out THERE has to offer." The pup sighed reluctantly as she began to eat. After dinner, her mother tucked her in, and Kissed her cheeks, which held a natural soft blush. "You know," she began, moving the pup's bangs out of her face, "your father and I love you with all of our hearts dear. And we only want what's best for you. The world outside is a scary place to be, but no matter what, we're with you always." She pressed her hand to her pup's forehead lovingly. "I love you Brea." She said. Finally, she left the room, turning the light out behind her.

Chapter Two.... A Quake in the Night

As the pup slumbered in her cozy burrow, a low rumble began to form, first distant, then growing louder by the minute! The pup awoke, frightened by the peculiar shaking of the earth, and ran to her bedroom window to see what was causing such a fit. Her eyes widened as a huge shadow came near her Village with thundering steps. She heard the Villagers scream as shattered glass and explosions could be heard from outside. The pup's mother ran in, covered in dirt and scrapes. Panicked, she snatched her pup from the bed, and began to run. "We must leave the burrow!" She said, flinging the door open, and escaping into the cool, brisk night. Now the pup could truly see what was going on! Everywhere she looked, a Villager or two would lie motionless on the ground, while many others could be seen being carried out in nets by these huge metallic monsters that were indescribable! Fire burned everywhere as the explosions and panic grew. The pup cried as her mother kept running. "It's okay Brea! I've got you!" Suddenly, the pup's mother fell to the ground, sending her pup tumbling a few feet away. "NO!" She cried as she was being dragged by some unknown force. The pup tried to free her beloved mother as she was being dragged, but to no avail. "Run, Brea!" Screeched the pup's mother, "Quickly! And stay hidden!" The pup cried as another explosion went off, sending her flying into a nearby market stall. The pup quickly brushed herself off, and looked about the smoke, and the blaze for her mother, but she was nowhere to be found. Another explosion happened, and it sent her flying through a window pane, crashing onto the floor of an abandoned Burrow. She hid under a bit of debris that stood where the kitchen once was, and waited out the storm as men fought, women screamed, and pups cried. In the distance, an evil laugh could be heard as the chaos continued.... Then, stillness...

Chapter Three.... Gone with the Wind

The sun shine once again, bright and warm on the once inhabited Village of Gray Mice. The pup bolted upright after hearing a piece of debris crumble slightly, and slowly inched her way out of hiding, showing caution every bit of the way. She exited the abandoned Burrow, and took a look at her Village, destroyed, smoking, everything from that night that happened, she now saw it stained on the Burrows and the markets! Rubble covered every inch of the road, and many bodies of families, and friends sat motionless on the ground.... Nothing had survived.... It was only her... The pup began to cry as she looked about the ruins that was once her home. In the distance, she heard a voice. Actually, she heard MANY voices, unfamiliar to her! She quickly buried herself beneath the rubble, and sat quietly, listening... "The whole Village..." One of the voices said. "It's gone.!" Another one added. The young pup thought of the possibility of survivors, but knew that it would be highly unlikely, considering they didn't sound like her clan at all. "Check the area!" A voice commanded, "Check for survivors!" That's when the young pup began to think another thought.... As the voices called to one another, and the rubble was dug through, the pup began to cry out a loud, screeching call. A rush of feet came over, and before she knew it, the rubble was quickly being pulled off of her. The pup looked into the blinding light of the sun, and saw three figures looming over her: a pink Hedgehog, a yellow, two tailed Fox, and a brown Jungle Badger. "Amy! Call Sonic and Knuckles, quick!" Commanded the Fox. The pink Hedgehog, Amy, nodded to show she understood, and ran off, calling for the two. "It's okay," began the Fox gently, "we've got you." He gently lifted the pup from the rubble, and carried her to an empty clearing. "Look! They're coming back!" The Badger exclaimed. The pup looked behind the fox, and saw a blue Hedgehog, and a red Echidna was rushing to where they sat, the pink Hedgehog following close behind. "What is it Tails?" Asked the red Echidna. "Yeah," began the blue Hedgehog, "what are you three riled up about?" "We found a survivor." The Badger explained quickly. "She's a pup!" Added Tails. "A pup?!" Both the Echidna and the Hedgehog was shocked. "Everyone in the village perished, except for ONE pup?" asked the Echidna. Tails nodded solemnly, and stepped out from in front of her, showing the young, frightened pup, bruised and scarred. The Echidna grew furious, and began to punch the ground beneath him, turning the leftover rubble into dust. "How could Eggman do this to innocent people!" He exclaimed. "He's EGGMAN, Knuckles. He ALWAYS destroys and terrorizes." The blue Hedgehog explained in disdane. "Evidently he's heartless as well, seeing as he left her as an endangered people, and the ONLY one left of her clan. She's too young to be supporting herself!" Amy added. Knuckles sunk to his knees exhaustedly, his breathing heavy. "She's just a pup! I'm willing to bet she didn't even kick into her powers yet." He replied, regaining his posture. "Well then," began Tails, "What will we do now Sonic?" "I guess we bring her back with us and call it a morning." Sonic replied, shaking his head. The pup sat, terrified as the thought of leaving her Village, and living with strangers filled her mind. "She could stay with me, Sonic." Suggested the Jungle Badger. "I don't think so Sticks." Sonic said heasetently, "Your too wild and daring." "What about me?" Asked Knuckles, "I could take care of her!" "With your unrelenting strength? Yeah, no way." Sonic replied, crossing his arms. "Next!" "How about me Sonic?" Amy asked, nudging him slightly. Sonic brushed her away, embarrassed, and replied "Too clingy..." "Well you're always busy Sonic! Who else will take care of her!?" Tails exclaimed. Sonic smirked smugly, looking Tails up and down.... That's when realization hit... "No.." Tails began nervously, "N-no, no. I can't do it." "Why not Tails?" Sonic began, "you're smart, lovable, and not to mention the greatest friend ever!" "B-but Sonic!" "No buts!" "S-sonic!" "Nah-uh!" "Ple-" "nope! You're taking care of her, and that's that!" Tails sighed in defeat. "Okay... But you all are helping!" "Don't worry Tails," Knuckles said, patting him on the shoulder, "you'll see us quite often." "Why do I get the feeling that this is gonna be horrible all the way through?" Tails complained. The group laughed, and, with the small pup in his arms, Tails and his friends headed home, leaving the ruined village behind forever...
