In the days leading up to the Homecoming dance, the irritability that Warren had previously felt towards the Sidekicks who had become a part of his daily life at school had turned into indifference.

Having the duo be a part of this new group of friends had both positive and negative aspects to it.

The positive aspects included Warren's enjoyment of seeing Cassidy's smile and her newfound ability to fully enjoy her school life, a wish he had harbored for quite some time. The once-suppressed sounds of her laughter now echoed freely, and the constant pain that had burdened her in the past was noticeably lessened.

Even in the instances when they had classes on opposite sides of the school, he didn't have to fret, as fate seemed to be on their side. Conveniently, one of the Sidekicks was always present whenever Cassidy ventured into the hallways, acting as a protective shield to prevent her from becoming anyone's target.

This was the drawback, though not as severe as it could have been. There were still people who saw multiple targets as an even more enjoyable challenge, however, with someone by her side, Cassidy gained more confidence in standing up for herself.

He was aware that it was still a habit she needed to work on, particularly when she was on her own. However, progress, no matter how small, was always a positive step forward.

"And then she was like, stop—You don't scare me anymore" Ethan spoke animatedly, gesturing with his hands on the grass he was sitting on, barely avoiding swatting Warren with his flapping arms. However, the male didn't react, instead finding himself entertained by the scene before him.

Ethan animatedly narrated the recent encounter he'd had with Cassidy just moments ago, before reuniting with the group after their classes had concluded.

Cassidy hid behind the book she had borrowed from Zach, her cheeks turning rosy in embarrassment as Warren continued sending her impressed and smug glances.

"It wasn't that impressive," Cassidy protested, gradually lowering the book that shielded her face. "I just...wanted them to leave us alone," she clarified, her voice tinged with embarrassment.

"It was still amazing," Ethan dismissed her comment with a dismissive wave of his hand, continuing to embellish the story with a touch of exaggeration. It was clear to everyone that this account was a bit of an embellishment since it was a rare occurrence for Cassidy to use her powers in such a way that would cause people to flee in terror.

Magenta, once again engrossed in completing her last-minute homework, looked up at the couple and casually inquired, "Speaking of which, I've been wondering...how did you two end up getting together?"

Layla, leaning on her hand and almost staring at the couple with dreamy eyes, chimed in, "I've been curious about that too. Can we ever know the love story of Cassidy and Warren?" She then wiggled her eyebrows suggestively and added, "It must be quite the tale."

"She's low-key struggling to conceal her disbelief, isn't she?" Warren remarked, glancing over at Cassidy and chuckling when she didn't deny it.

Cassidy nodded in agreement. "It wasn't really anything extravagant," she explained. "Initially, he didn't really want to be my friend. He was quite unfriendly at first."

"Hey, cut me some slack for being cautious about what others thought about you talking to someone they feared," Warren retorted, his voice tinged with defensiveness.

Cassidy nodded, closing one eye and adding a playful poke to his cheek. "More like a son of someone they feared," she corrected, drawing an unexpected "awe" from Zach, who was sitting directly in front of them. "But yeah, somehow, over time, we ended up becoming friends," she clarified.

Layla leaned forward, resting on both palms, her smile still fixed in place. "When did the sparks start?" she inquired, a hint of eagerness in her voice. "Was it an awkward moment? Who confessed? Spare no details!" she added, her curiosity clearly piqued.

Cassidy started to open her mouth to speak, but she stopped herself, furrowing her brows as she turned to look at Warren. It was clear that neither of them knew how to answer Layla's question, as they were unsure if any "sparks" had truly flown between them, as Layla expected.

Cassidy explained, her hand resting on her chin as she spoke. "It was during summer vacation when we had been on several dates during our freshman year, but the confession was kind of like an unspoken thing, you know? We just kind of went with the flow."

At various points during her explanation, Cassidy glanced at Warren for confirmation and received a nod from him in agreement.

Warren shrugged nonchalantly. "It just sort of naturally occurred," he stated, causing the girls and Zach to share glances, their expressions deflating slightly as the story didn't turn out to be as dramatic as they had hoped.

Ethan, the only one who wasn't eagerly expecting a grand tale, responded cheerfully, "Well, that's pretty great."

Warren chuckled and nudged Cassidy's shoulder with his own. "Looks like we've found the new optimist in our group," he jested.

Cassidy responded, feigning offense. "Warren!" she exclaimed, a playful pout on her lips.
