(Y/N) TRAILED behind him, double-checking her satchel to make sure all her belongings were there. Alan tried not to bump into her, stuffing his hands into his coat pockets, she looked up and he turned away, they were nearing the exit, Alan watched her wave at her colleagues goodbye, smiling at them warmly.

He smiled at the sight, and held the door open for her, "Thank you." She says, smiling radiantly at him, his breath caught, and he simply nodded, not trusting himself to speak. He led her silently to David's car, opening the door for her again, and raced to the other side, ignoring the erratic thump of his heart, he pulled the door open, and settled in the driver's seat, "Ready?" He asks her, after clearing his throat.

"Yeah, ready." She answered, pulling the seatbelt over her, he did the same and started driving, in the corner of his eyes he could see her twirling the straps of her bag on her fingers, the shine of a silver band on her ring finger. Disappointment coursed through Alan's body, "Oh, you're married?" He asks casually, trying not to sound disheartened.

"God no," (Y/N) laughs, showing him her palm, she was wearing the ring upside down, the design- or whatever people called it- was a small heart with a little jewel in the middle, "This was given to me from one of my patients back then, she was a little six-year-old who needed a heart transplant, Charlotte is her name, her father was a jewelry maker, so she had begged him to make me a ring, she gave it to me when she was discharged, saying thank you for fixing her heart, I cried a lot when I got home after that, it was very touching." She blushed, "Sorry for rambling."

"It's alright." Alan grins at her, relieved, stopping himself from saying that it was adorable, that would sound very weird, "Why do you wear it backwards?" (Y/N) twirls the ring around her finger, "Dunno, just something I do, I guess," she answered with a slightly awkward smile.

"Have you been a surgeon for a long time?" Alan asks politely, making a turn, "Mhmm," She hums, glancing at him briefly then back out the window, "Started my residency maybe ten or fifteen years ago, I'm planning on becoming a professor, David mentioned you were in America for some time." Alan nods his head, "Yeah," He taps the wheel, inclining his head a little bit, "I worked there for a little while,"

The silence was a little stifling, but it wasn't uncomfortable as Alan had imagined, he spotted a gas station a couple of blocks away, "Would you mind if I make a turn to the gas station?" he asks her, she sat up, "Not at all," she assured him, "Are you out of gas?" (Y/N) leaned over the console slightly and peered at the dashboard behind the wheel, "No," Alan chuckled softly, "My nieces asked for some chocolate," (Y/N) nodded and settled back on the seat, "That's sweet of you." she gave him a grin, he just smiled back.

He made a turn into the station and parked in front of the tiny store, "Do you want me to get you something?" Alan unbuckled his seatbelt, motioning his head towards the store, "Ah, sure.. y'know what- I'll go with you." she unbuckled her seatbelt, and pulled her satchel over her shoulder which caused her things to spill out of it, "Oops sorry," her eyes were wide as she scrambled to get her thing back in the bag.

"Here- I'll help," Alan reached for a notepad, "No no, it's alright I got it," she waved his hand away, "You sure?" (Y/N) hums in confirmation, he nods and took the key out off ignition, he pushed the door open and quickly rushes to her side of the car.
