Mrs Wild walked carefully to the witness stand. Her hands were placed flat by her flowing black skirt decorated with small yellow polkadots.
I watched her cautiously, trying to anticipate what she was about to say.
Atlas' new best friend and P's number one supporter followed Mrs Wild, and gave her a reassuring smile as she sat down, smoothing her skirt and getting comfortable, ready for her interrogation.
The whole room was silent. My mind was focused, I was poised like a hawk watching her. Every slight movement. I was becoming the predator they had painted me to be, but my prey were here words; words that would have the power to ruin my entire life.
"Good afternoon Mrs Wild," Mr Oaks smiled at Mrs Wild, as though they were life long acquaintances.
The witness didn't reply, the nerves had stopped her from speaking. I felt my entire body lean forward, waiting for her to say something; anything. Watching her swear the oath that she would tell nothing but the truth was like watching a doll come to life.
"Would you mind telling the jury how you were related to the victim."
"I am..." Her eyes widened as she realised her mistake. Present tense. "...Was. I was her mother."
"If you can Mrs Wild, can you tell me the last time you saw your daughter."
She took a deep breath and looked to the monster sitting amongst the public for reassurance. I couldn't even bare to look at him.
"About two weeks or so before she went missing, she came to the house. I hadn't seen her for a while before then, so I was surprised to see her. She seemed distressed, but I never found out why." Mrs Wild answered, finally making eye contact with her interrogator once more with wide empty eyes.
"Did she give a reason for her visit?"
Mrs Wild was lost in thought for a second. I had noticed her head turn towards me several times but she never made eye contact with me, the man she thought had killed her daughter. "She said she needed help with something. That she couldn't tell me about it right then, but she needed a certain amount of money and she would pay me back and explain everything when she saw me again. I never did..see her again."
"How much money exactly was it Mrs Wild?" Atlas' lawyer pushed.
"Only a few hundred, I didn't have anymore than that."
"And Cassi didn't give any reason at all for what the money would be used for?"
She shook her head and opened her mouth to say something but then closed it again, thinking better than to say what was on her mind.
"I need to know anything you remember her telling you, Mrs Wild." Mr Oaks stated calmly, knowing the exact way to deal with a woman as unstable as the Wild mother. My eyes flickered between Atlas and his mother, both of them had that general look of nervous apprehension that formed a natural part of their features, but Atlas looked comfortable, like he was watching actors perform a play he had already sat through multiple times. I was the complete opposite, with no idea as to what was coming my way, but from what it seemed like I was going to have to brace a massive hit.
"When I asked her how York was, as I knew they had been seeing each other..." She quickly explained as if the entire room didn't already know that. fact; that was the exact reason. I was sat where I was. "She seemed to go strangely quiet, other than telling me he'd gotten himself into trouble that she had to sort out. Later I learnt he'd been arrested and was on bail for drug related offences."
