My eyes popped open wide and were instantly burned by the white fluorescent light above me. This was not my room. My head was spinning as I did my best to remember what happened.
I sat up with a gasp as the memories whirled through my head. A sob racked its way up my throat.
“Calm down,” a cold familiar voice said from the side of the room. My eyes shot over to him. He was leaning against a white counter watching me. His pitch black hair fell over his forehead and contrasted sharply with the bright purple of his eyes. He seemed to be seventeen or eighteen, but I couldn’t be sure. The muscles in his arms moved under his fitted long sleeved black shirt as he crossed his arms. My stomach was turning in fear as I realized that this was the one who I’d run into.
“Wh-who are you?” I asked.
“Gabriel,” he answered.
My jaw locked as he smirked. I felt a sudden rush of anger burn within me. He knew I wanted more than that. He knew I wanted to know everything about the situation. He as toying with me. “Tell me what’s going on,” I said with a hard glare.
His smirk dropped and he walked forward, his eyes burning. “I will tell you what I want to when I want to. Are we understood, Angel?”
“My name is Avia,” I replied.
“I know.” With that he went and leaned back against the counter.
I looked around the white room. It was an infirmary. White counters with deep sinks on either side of the room. Twelve beds placed an equal distance apart with white sheets from one end of the back wall to the next with a dark wooden nightstand in between each. I was towards the middle of the beds and there was only Gabriel in here other than me. Cabinets were in a quad in the middle of the room and an examination table sat beside them. Across from the beds was the wall with a large white door.
As I was eyeing the distance to the door it swung open loudly, making me jump. A man that looked to be in his forties walked in with—“John?!” His name slipped through my lips in shock before I could stop it.
“Hey, Avia,” he waved as they came to a stop in front of me. Gabriel walked over casually his eyes flashing between me and John. “It’s actually Jason, by the way.”
“I must say I was apprehensive in allowing you to recruit someone but my doubt waivers. She is beautiful and strong. I believe she could do well here,” the man said.
I was about to speak when Gabriel cut me off. “I still can’t believe you let this idiot recruit.”
“Please,” scoffed Joh--Jason. “It’s not like you have a problem with the person I chose. You think she’s hot.”
Gabriel’s eyes narrowed at Jason dangerously. “I have a problem with you choosing the new members because you almost got me killed. Me! Do you realize how hard it is to kill me? And you almost did it in an hour! You’re that destructive.”
“Will someone tell me what the hell is going on?!” I shouted, annoyed with their banter.
Everyone’s eyes turned to me. The man, whose name I still don’t know, smiled at me. “You’re now a member of the Secret Crime Division. I am Clint Porter, the head of this whole project. We work with teenage members to take care of unsolved crimes in different areas around the world.”
“Is that even legal?” I asked skeptically.
Clint gave a tight grimace. “The government approved it so yes. But technically it isn’t something that is supposed to happen.”
