I never really wanted to tie down to someone. I am very much a loner. I like doing things on my own and enjoy it that way. But my parents always discouraged that behavior.
'Abilena you can't be single forever. Everyone has a soulmate.'
'Abilena you need to break out of the shell of yours before it swallows you whole'
I didn't want to find someone to love. It was uncommon in our society to be alone. But I've always been alone. Why should that change?
"Abby darling." Mother called.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"We need to talk to you!" Father went. I headed downstairs and into the kitchen where I heard them.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"Honey. I think you know." Mother said and I shook my head looking away. "Your 22! The average couple is together by the age of 18 at the latest!" She said.
"Well I don't have one."
"We all have soulmates." Father said.
"It's been 22 years. I don't."
"Well. We know. We want to help." Mother continued.
"I'm okay alone." I said.
"Abby. That isn't ethical." Father went.
"Love isn't some job. It used to not be."
"It's different now." Mother said.
"So what is the plan?" I asked.
"You're going to be staying with The scientist." Mother said.
"What? Are you kidding? He's crazy!" I shouted, standing up.
"He isn't. He helps you find your soulmate." Mother said.
"I don't want to!" I said.
"Well we are taking you to tomorrow."
Father said. "And until you get your soulmate you are in our order."
"That isn't fair!" I shouted.
"Life isn't fair Abilena."
The next day I was packing my things and heading out to Miami to The Scientist's house. He lives on the beach, and I've heard he has crazy ways to make you fall in love. Even though he hasn't found his own soulmate. He studied love in college and the brain. He is super weird and finds weird ways to change you to be goofy and kind. That is not what will happen with me.
"We're here sweetheart." Mother said.
"Great." I rolled my eyes.
"Let's go." Mother said.
"Hello!" A man said. He had curly brown hair and bright green eyes. I felt my heart soor and I crossed my arms. "Hi i'm Harry." He said, scooping me up in a hug. I felt my whole body shiver and when I pulled back, I looked up to his eyes and he looked dumbfounded.
Is this what happens when you meet The Scientist?
"Well would you folks like to come in and have some dinner?" Harry smiled. "I made vegan lasagna."
"We aren't vegan." Mother said. "But Abliena is."
"Abby." I said, looking at him and he nodded smiling.
"Well then." Harry nodded. I smiled at my parents before waving goodbye. Harry helped me walk in with my bags.
"Well, like I said I have vegan lasagna." Harry said.
