"BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!", a ringing noise blares in my ear while bright yellow blinking lights blinded me. Everything was blurry, but I could make out quickly moving figures shifting by. My feet can barely support my body as I attempt to stand up and all that I can remember is a blast of air blowing onto me when I was knocked out.
-
Suddenly a loud voice over the PA system yells "No one on the premises is to leave, exit tunnels have been sealed off!" More swift feet rush by as I start to be able to see again. The only words that escape my mouth are, "HELP! What happened! I can't remember- HELP!" I tug on other peoples shirts, but all they do is hit me off and continue running. I can see other people doing the same thing, nearly or more confused than I am. A loud CRASH and I'm out again.
-
I am once again awaken, blurry eyed again for a short time, but, as it seems, in a much calmer environment. Everything is pure white with silent scuffling of plastic. Four men and women in hazmat suits approach me; a bad vibe following them.
"You are Audaxton Hughes, yes?", asked a Russian sounding man in the front of three others
"Yes, why am I here? What happened?" I respond vaguely, continuing my recovering
"It seems zat someone broke ze central biodome that pulls radiation out of ze oxygen entering our city", the Russian one continues
-
"The rescue team managed to pull your seemingly lifeless body out of the premises; after testing we have found some results. Would you like to here the good new or the bad news first?", the beautiful blond woman says slightly muffled by the hazmat suit
"I guess bad news first", I stutter, scratching the back of my neck
The lady takes a notepad from one of the other men and quickly responds, "Well, you have been exposed to moderate levels of radiation and now you have ARS"
"What's that?"
"Stupid boy, you should know. You've been working at the Air Filtering Department for over five years!"
"Sorry, I just don't remember, I must have gotten hit really hard when I got knocked out"
"ARS is Acute Radiation Syndrome, you have Cancer"
"Cancer?"
"Yes, Audoxton, Cancer, Radiatiation can cause Cancer" the lady repeats, obviously irritated "You have about a month to live"
-
"Isn't there a cure?", I ask desperately
"Yes", one of the men who hadn't talked at all said in a deep voice "-not here of coarse, only at the neighboring biodome city, but that's about 100 miles from here"
"Oh my gosh! That's where my family lives! I'll go"
"How will you get there? There is obviously radiation out there"
"Don't you see, sir, I already have radiation poisoning, I can go alone!"
