When people shake and quake in fear, they say that it is bone-chilling. But what does it mean for our bones to chill? Is it a play on the cold causing you to shiver? But then what does that have to do with bones? Is it because fear feels so deeply rooted inside us that it can only be attributed to our skeleton? But our skeleton is inside us. It is surrounded by nerves, muscles, and blood. It is warm inside us.
But the phrase is used literally as well! People use it when they are just plain cold; with nothing to do with fear. How then does simply freezing relate to our bones. Is it that bones are associated with death? Is it that bones remind us that we are nothing more than walking corpses? But our skeletons are lucky. After we are gone, our skeletons get to sleep six feet underground. Even in the coldest winters, it is warm six feet down.
But why the quakes; the fear? Are weto believe our bones chill us from the inside out; that death comes from withinas we age and grow cold? Do our bones shake inside us like we are coffins in anearthquake? Do our skeletons wish they were cold? It is warm inside us.
