After the run of Super Smash Bros Melee, things went quiet for a long time. It seemed that the fighters had become exhausted from all of the intense fighting they had done. To prevent them from losing their fighting prowess over time, the fighters were put into a suspended animation (in the form of trophies) for many years, where they did not age. This is why younger fighters like Ness and the Ice Climbers remain children, and this process would be repeated in the gaps between subsequent tournaments.

Meanwhile, however, Tabuu had recovered much of his strength and was preparing for the multidimensional takeover. He had created an army of shadowy creatures and tricked a group of villains, some old and new, into doing his bidding, giving them stone trophy transformation cannons and using Meta Knight's Halberd airship to deploy shadow troops into vaious worlds. King Dedede however in the back of his mind suspected something was up. He was always a somewhat more wary king, recalling the incident where he protected the Fountain of Dreams from Nightmare, and not too villainous unlike the others. He had reanimation badges fashioned in his image just in case.

In time, it came that the trophies would reawaken. Galeem had found Tabuu's hideout. Thinking it merely as good place for the new tournament, its intersection with many dimensions making it easier to recruit new fighters, he created a grand mansion for the ever increasing roster to live in. Dharkon made sure to recruit more villains and anti-heroes, like the aforementioned Meta Knight and King Dedede, along with Wario (once a villain to Mario), and several larger ones like Petey Piranha, Porky, and Ridley. The latter three became bosses.

Tabuu took advantage of the new bosses and secretly used them as extra threats to deter resistance.

Soon, the third tournament, "Super Smash Bros Brawl" began. Mario and Kirby were thrown into an stadium and they, for the first time in so long, began to see again. What they were soon to see, however, was not something good- the Halberd flew over the stadium, releasing shadows and a bomb set up by ROBS. It was then that the heroes knew there was an omniverse needed saving.

After Tabuu was defeated, he ceased to be. The event continued as normal, and once it was completed, the fighters returned to their trophy states.

The next event went as normal, without much of a conflict. However, behind the scenes, Galeem and Dharkon were not satisfied with where Super Smash Bros was going. Rather than training their skills and minds to the ideals that the interdimensional gods had intended for them, the fighters were seen as having "tiers" where some fighters were considered better than others. Those at the top had no motivation to improve, while those at the bottom were put down and convinced that they couldn't get better. On top of all that, the fighters in the mansion started making friends with each other, which was not what the gods wanted of them.

Soon, Galeem became hopeless and wanted to end it all. If the omniverse was going to be light and pure, it would need to be reset. He would organize a fifth and final Super Smash Bros event, "Ultimate" that would draw as many fighters as possible, both old and new. And as they all stood on the cliff overseeing the endless ocean of Tabuu's former domain, Galeem would unleash the light of Purification.

Dharkon had a similar plan: to corrupt the omniverse and all of its residents. With the ultimate event coming together, he would unleash the ultimate energy of chaos to all and cloak everything in darkness.

The clash between the two would become known as the "World of Light". All of the omniverse will be at stake.
