"Tarts are ready!" called a cheerful Hebe from the kitchen. Alex's aunt who had been named after the Greek Goddess swiftly hauled the tray out of the oven. Her rosy cheeks blossoming with pride as Alex's nostrils flared with the nostalgia of stewed apples and sprinkled cinnamon.
Patiently she waited as Hebe dispersed a quick snowstorm of brown sugar over the flowery tart- where thin slices of the fruit circulated on the top, each peaking upwards like petals. Refusing to wait, her mouth was already watering like a fountain.
Noticing her hand subconsciously begin to gravitate towards the steaming treat, Hebe swatted her niece's arm away. "I meant this tart," she swiftly handed her a plate where a blue and pink tart with swirling cream met her gaze. She was always exploring her cooking through colour.
"Is this a new recipe of yours?" asked Alex, sniffing the tart cautiously.
"Mhm, tell me what you think about it."
Her niece's heart sank a little as she scooped a little onto her fork. Her tastebuds still cried out for the sweet relish of her aunt's staple dish. To swirl over flecks of cinnamon-infused pastry until finding herself licking the plate clean.
Instead, she was met with the gentle kiss of watermelon on her tongue. Almost as light as a fairy floss but warm and buttery like a muffin.
"Soo... what'd you think?"
"It's good- really good." murmured Alex between another mouthful. She was ready to cut herself another slice when the bell at the cafe's front door rang inciting that someone had entered.
Quickly springing to her feet, she dusted herself off and darted to greet the customer. All the while Hebe gazed back at her half-finished plate with a light amusement sparkling in her eyes.
(and then I never finished the story :P)
