It was the morning of the date. We have occasional Saturdays off so there was no training, much to everyone's excitement. Despite the happiness in the camp atmosphere, I felt uneasy about the whole "date" thing. I mean I hadn't really been on a date before. And on top of that I was clueless as to what we were even doing. Jean had said to meet him at 11:30 for a surprise, which didn't exactly help my anxiety over the matter. At breakfast, I was met with stares and whispers from the other cadettes. Great, I guess word had gotten out about the date. I tried my best to act unbothered and was heading to where I usually sat when I was confronted by Eren.
"Are you really going on a date with horseface of all people?!" He asked, accusingly.
"So what if I am? Why do you care? You're the one who ignored me for the last two days!" I snapped back. The hostility in Eren's eyes wavered for a moment, failing to hide his shocked expression. Even I was taken aback by what I had said, and my face flushed a bright red. I had never snapped back at Eren before. I brushed past Eren and felt the gaze of the other cadets on me, watching with silent judgement.
"Mikasa, wait!" Eren called after me.
I turned around "Look Eren, I-we can talk about this another time but I need some space right now."
I hardly touched my food, the whole breakfast. I caught Eren looking my way a couple times, but he would glance away every time I met his gaze. I could never tell what he was thinking! After ten minutes of awkwardness, I couldn't take it. I cleared my plate and left the dining hall to find a quiet place to think away from the gossip and chatter. I saw a small tree with some shade underneath near the perimeter of camp and walked over to take a seat.
I still had several hours before the date with Jean. He must have been off getting ready for the whole surprise, as I didn't see him at breakfast. The thought was comforting, and despite the bad start to the day it was nice to know I at least had something to look forward to. The whole breakfast fiasco still lingered in my mind, and for some reason my brain kept replaying it in my head, much to my annoyance. Why do boys have to be so complicated?
I glanced up at the sound of footsteps, only to find Armin walking over. My mind breathed a heavy sigh of relief that it wasn't Eren and I relaxed a little.
"Do you mind if I sit next to you?" I nodded and motioned for him to join me.
"You and Eren's breakfast argument seems to be the talk of the camp."
"I noticed," I sighed, "I don't think I'll ever understand him."
Armin glanced back towards the camp "Eren is complicated. As you and I both know, Eren isn't the best at handling things."
"I know, it's just I wish he would make things clear. He seems to have no problem expressing his dislike at my going on a date with Jean, but it's not like he's offering to take me!" I remarked.
"Do you want him to ask you on a date?" Armin inquired.
"No, it's not that. I..." I trailed off, "I think that going on this date will be good for me. I think right now I need a break from Eren and all the drama. Anyways I should probably head back and get ready"
"Good luck," Armin called as I started off back towards the girls' cabin.
I was relieved to find the cabin was mostly empty except for Christa and Annie, who was still not awake yet.
I rummaged through my outfits trying to find a suitable one for a date. I was about to give up when Christa tapped my shoulder "would you like to borrow one of my dresses?"
" I'm flattered but I seriously doubt that I will fit into one of your dresses" I admitted.
" I'm sure you'll fit into this one," Christa said pulling out a white sundress, "it was a hand me down and it's always been to big for me"
"Are you sure I should borrow it? I don't want to ruin it"
"Don't worry about it" Christa insisted.
I slipped the dress on. It was slightly on the tighter side but fit well enough. It was an off the shoulder dress that ended just above knee length and flared out a bit from the waist. I paired it with my old flats and was about to grab my scarf but I decided against it.
Christa squealed as I gave her a quick twirl before heading off to meet Jean. Even Annie sat up gave me a thumbs up.
I nervously peeled out the door of the girls cabin to make sure that the coast was clear. The last thing I wanted was to run into Eren. I began speed walking over to the meeting spot by the path that wagons took in and out of camp, where I found Jean nervously pacing, waiting for my arrival

AN: I hope you all are staying safe. I was originally planning to make the date one chapter but I had to break it into two so the chapters would all stay around the same length. I know it's been awhile since I last updated but I have finished the next couple chapters and will post them soon!
