I looked incredulously at my beta. What he was suggesting was out of the question. I couldn't even think of it, giving it no space in my mind. I can't believe he could have even propose such an idea. He knew how I felt.
"What kind of foolish shit are you spewing?" I indignantly demanded. I watched Elliott sputter for a little bit before he was able to gain his bearings.
"I wasn't suggesting it. I was letting you know some of the pack's concerns. They're worried, you're getting older. You know they can't have pups until we have a luna. The pack hasn't seen children on years. They want you to just pick someone." He explained, averting his eyes and keeping a submissive stance. I let out a menacing growl.
"I understand it's been a while since the pack has seen pups, but I won't sacrifice my chance at a mate. I've waited too long." I state, leaving no room for discussion. I was done with this conversation, he knew as much and quickly left my office.
I continued my paperwork, plagued with conflicting thoughts. The situation was starting to aggravate me. I gave my pack my all, this was the one thing I asked for, surely they could respect that? I couldn't choose a luna, not that I would have difficulty finding one. There were plenty of women looking to climb the pack hierarchy. No matter how much thought I gave it, I just didn't feel right. Something was telling me to hold off just a little while longer. I knew I could hold off forever, that would be devastating for my pack. I knew I had to give myself more time, like a sense something was going to happen soon that would make my decision for me.
My reverie was interrupted by a pack warrior busting into my office, informing me about a few rogues edging close to pack territory. I ordered him to send four of the closest pack warriors out to inspect and apprehend any territory trespassers.
Upon finishing my paperwork I was mind-linked about only one of the rogues trespassing but putting up a fight and severely injuring a warrior. I quickly made my way to the border. The closer I got the more anxious I felt, something was definitely wrong. I picked up speed, wanting to reach them before the situation worsened. Feeling a pang of panic course through me, I let out a deafening roar.
Arriving to the border, I had trouble focusing on the scene before me. First, there was the injured warrior lying on the ground, bleeding profusely. My cold gaze making its way to the large commotion that was four of my warriors holding down a medium sized grey wolf. That was a whole circumstance I would unpack later. Finally, I move my glare to the captured wolf. The second our eyes met, all my previous anxieties evaporated. All I was left with was peace and an intense adoration. The warriors slowly let go of her and she shifted into her human form. Despite her haggard appearance, she was striking. I watched as emotions quickly crossed her face, too many to name.
She opened her mouth and forced out, "Mine." That seemed to soak up any energy she had left because her eyes rolled to the back of her head and she collapsed. My heart dropped and I rushed over to grab her and assess her wounds.
"What happened to her?" I demanded, an edge in my voice. I pick her up in my arms and turn to take her to the pack doctor. I could see clearly she was losing a dangerous amount of blood and had been for a while. Her leg looked torn to shreds. My warriors followed me, quietly curious about what I was doing. I wasn't focused on them, they could wait, but the heavily injured woman in my arms. My mate, I almost couldn't believe it. I think I would have freaked out a little more considered how long I've waited for her if it hadn't been for her state. I was beyond scared, and more worried than I had been in my life.
We finally arrived at the pack doctor, and when a few nurses came to take her from me I nearly lost it. Finally they had coaxed me in letting them work on her, telling me they would immediately alert me with any updates on her condition.
"With all due respect, Alpha, why are you so hung up about this rogue?" One of the warriors dared to question me. I whipped around in his direction so fast he stumbled.
"You will not speak about her like that!" I boomed violently. At this point Elliot burst through the hospital doors, I could see a million questions on his face. Instead of hounding me, he knew now was not the time and diffused the situation by directing the warriors away.
I sat in a chair in the waiting room, ran my fingers through my hair trying to calm down. I stewed in my anxieties for what seemed like hours, what if she doesn't wake up?
Finally, ending my inner distress, Elliot makes his way back over to me.
"She's your mate?" He asks. I give a small nod in reply, not even bothering to look at him. I had never felt so helpless in my life.
"She's gonna be fine. It sounds like you were lucky you got there when you did though."
I growled at him in response, "Those warriors were not following protocol, they will be punished. When I got there four of them were holding her down. Four!"
"It will be taken care of. Right now just focus on your mate." He says pointing towards the operating doors, where a nurse exits and makes her way towards us.
"Alpha." She addresses me.
"Get on with it. Is she okay?"
She pulls her lips in tight for a second before replying, "She'll live, however, her leg had extensive damage and it will most likely take a long time to heal, if it will at all. The trauma was immense, tendons had been basically shredded, so much damage it was hard to put it back together. Other than that her injuries were minor. She's resting now if you'd like to visit her."
I hastily made my way to her room, she still hadn't woken up. Sitting in a chair near the bed, I grabbed her hand. I didn't even know her name and yet I was so infatuated with her. She was absolutely beautiful. I couldn't help but wonder how she ended up as a rogue.
She opened her eyes after a few hours of me sitting there holding her hand. It was a relief seeing her greyish blue eyes. What I failed to anticipate was her reaction when regaining consciousness.
