It was nearly sunset on a Saturday afternoon. Martin Shale was driving a mower, which was cutting the grass of his family's long field. His mother, Tina Shale, had been furious with Martin after he had spilled his glass of milk on top of her favorite tablecloth, which had so many stains on it that Martin had no clue why she cared. Of course, she had never been nice to him about anything, unless his dad was there.
She had a way of acting like she was perfect around Martin's dad. To Martin's dislike, Martin's dad didn't come home until sundown. In Martin's mind, it meant freedom when he was home. Martin was very excited about the time, for he had been working on the field for hours. It was so big, he could barely see the tree line at the edge of the long, partially cut field.
Martin couldn't help but think, Finally, dad will be home soon. Then I can finally stop this stupid work. He continued to drive the mower, which was very old so he had to push all he had onto the small lever to do so. When the sun had disappeared from view, Martin turned off the old, blueish-green mower, and ran into his large, red house. When he ran into the kitchen, he saw his mom, standing by the fridge. Her face was calm and relaxed. This was only temporary. When she looked over at Martin, her facial expression tensed and her eyes began to slightly water. Martin could barely stand the sight of her being sad, no matter how much she had hurt him, he never hated her.
He looked away from her, looking beside her. This was when he actually noticed the fridge. It was no longer like a fridge. It's appearance had changed from a rectangular container, to a large spheric room that took up half the kitchen. Martin was surprised that he didn't notice this before. He walked towards it and went to open the shining, metal handled door when his mother said, "Be careful when your in there, it's going to change your life forever." Martin stared at her for a moment, then placed his hand upon the slick, cool handle. He opened the door and revealed a large, white, room that was brightly lit by the blazing lights inside. Martin stepped inside and found that all there was in the room was a bronze, metal chair. It had a small series of steps leading up to it. He took a few steps forward, and then the door closed behind him. He turned and looked behind him. A clicking sound, one of a lock, that echoed inside what he now thought of as a prison or chamber.
Martin walked up the steps and sat upon the chair. He expected it to be cold like ice, but instead, he began to feel very hot, he was inside a baking oven, cooking at a high temperature. He wanted to stand, but his legs had become very numb, like they had been injected with an anesthetic.
Martin looked around. He saw only the lights of the room that he was in. He looked up at the ceiling and saw a ginormous sphere floating at the top. He looked down and saw a screen in front of him. It wasn't like a normal screen, it was more of a holographic image. Martin reached out to touch it when it spoke, in a calm, female voice. "Welcome," the voice said, "You have now reached the designated age to take your Orb test."
There was a short pause, then, "What's an 'Orb test'?" Martin questioned.
"The test is to find what type of magic you can use without a wand, but you must first find out what your Orb is to be able to use it. Now, let us begin our test. First, what is your name?"
"Martin Shale," he replied.
"If you were to get one ability out of these five, which would you choose? Strength, intelligence, speed, endurance, growth, or transformation."
"Er...I would probably want intelligence."
"What would you use it for?"
"Learning new things, and being able to know how to get the other abilities easily," Martin answered. Then, the room became reddish-purple, like a plum.
"The test is nearly complete. All you need to do is choose one of these three Orbs-"
"What exactly is an Orb?"
"As I said before, it is the magic a wizard can use without their wand. Now, let us continue. The three Orbs are, Energy, Time, and Telekinesis." There was a long pause. Martin knew that what he was about to choose, like his mom had said, would change his life forever.
"I choose, Energy," Martin said shakily, his heart pounding in his chest.
"It has been decided. You are now an Energio, a person who can control, create, and destroy all and any energy." He felt his legs suddenly wake up and he walked towards the door. Then, he asked the hologram a question.
"Are you a real person, or just a program or whatever it is?" He said.
"I am a person, I am a Dariomancer, or, for your knowledge, a person with the Orb of Darkness," she replied. "My name is Coranta, the people who were my friends called me Cora."
"What do you mean, 'who were your friends'? Don't you have friends?"
"I had to give my life for them when I was younger. Because of my sacrifice, I was given an extra ten seconds to try and save myself, for the Orb Master had given me life, but short. I took those last ten seconds to preserve my soul with the little bit of power I had left. I then became a mere shadow, one that can take many forms, and one of them is this."
"Can't you put your shadowy self back into your own physical self?"
"No, I can't, but I can form myself to look like me, but never back in my physical form. Would you like me to show you what I looked like?" Martin watched as the screen changed into a tall women. She had thin, long, jet black hair, small, green eyes, and had the appearance of a shadow, in which she was. She walked over to him, her feet moving silently against the metal floor. She placed a hand upon his shoulder. "Go to your mother, she is waiting to find out your results." Martin nodded and opened the door. When he walked into his kitchen, he collapsed.
