It was the night after my 7th birthday.

All the guests had just left the party and I was sitting on the couch, very exhausted from the long night. First, we watched the movie Winter is Rising , one of my personal favorites. Then we ate cake. Then we played Pin the tail on the Donkey and then we made balloons. Then everybody left.

I had been very excited to become 7. The lucky number 7! Little did I know the aftermath of this birthday was nowhere near lucky.

My mom called me to help clean up. She noted that I, Veronica, was being very helpful tonight. Yeah, I was one of those kids. Don't judge.

As soon as I went to bed, and I woke up, realising everything was black. I figured it was maybe midnight, considering how dark it was.

The next thing I heard was "VERONICA! HURRY UP! YOU'LL BE LATE FOR SCHOOL!"

I had absolutely NO IDEA what mom was talking about. I opened the curtains. I saw darkness. I flipped the light switch. Did the power go out? No, she wouldn't be calling me if it was midnight. No, the power did NOT go out. Panic in my bones, I screamed "MOOOOOOM!!!"

I was at the eye doctor's office. Dr. Bueno asked me to read the letter chart. I was confused. I saw no chart. I asked him this, and I guess he must've raised an eyebrow. He concluded that I was blind. He tried to tell my mother this the best way he could. He didn't want to hand her the benefit of the doubt. There was no exact reason why I was suddenly blind, but I just was. Dr. Bueno suggested I go to this place for blind people. Little did I know this "place" would impact the rest of my life forever.
