'What do you say, Great One?'

The band of hooded figures moved closer at a signal from their leader. Even though they were tense, the leader took his time before speaking.

'What do you say, Galbriath?'

The figure named Galbriath shifted on one foot to the other, clearly nervous.

'My lord, the plans are not working. It seems the End is failing. We have very little time.'

The leader began to walk slowly around the room, inspecting it as if it were the first time he set foot in it. 'The End is failing, you say? And what do you mean by "failing", Galbriath?'

Galbriath seemed as if he wanted to run out of the room. The others started shaking, even though the Great One had not threatened anyone.

'My...my lord, the dragon wants...sustenance. She spoke to Yereson for the first time. She seemed angry, or so Yereson says.'

'Sustenance?' the Great One turned to the person named Yereson. 'What sustenance, Yereson? We have provided Her with everything She needs.'

'My lord,' Yereson went down on one knee and gulped. He didn't like speaking to the Great One directly, for rumors suggested that it would be the end of you if you stated something he did not want to hear. 'My lord, I do not know of what She demands. She did not say anything about what She needed. She...She said that you would know, my lord.'

The Great One stroked his chin thoughtfully as he would do if he had a beard. 'I shall speak to Her tonight. Yereson, you may leave.'

'Leave, my lord?' the figure stuttered, shaking. The Great One sighed a deep sigh.

'Not Leave, Yereson. Leave, as in leave the room. All of you are such fools. I do not know how She is still sparing your worthless bodies.' He spat.

'Y-yes, my lord.' Yereson bowed his head, still shaking, and stumbled out of the room.

'Galbriath, come forward.'

He stepped forward obediently and folded his hands together. 'Yes, my lord?'

'What makes you say that the End is failing?'

Galbriath seemed on the verge of tears. 'My lord, no...creature wants to stay in the End anymore. Only a few loyal to Her are willing to stay. The connection to the End is wavering. If we do not get the egg out soon, then we never will be able to.'

The leader looked up sharply. 'The connection is wavering?'

'Yes, my lord.' He didn't want to continue.

The Great One stomped his foot in fury. 'Get out now! All of you!'

The others did not need a retelling. Everyone turned tail and raced for the door to save their sorry hides.
