As soon as Rose entered the house, she was surprised by a curly haired cannonball.
"Liz???" asked Rose in a surprised voice. She had never seen her this emotional.
"I was ... so... worried." she said between sobs.
"Are you ok Lizzy?" asked Rose, concerned. Lizzy had never cried before her.
"I kept seeing that message on the wall and I was so scared for you. You were held captive by a man carrying a gun, for god's sake."
Damien pulled Liz in a side hug, kissing her temple, wiping the tears from her face. Damien was the goofball, emotional and crybaby. He cried at a Pampers' commercial once. Lizzy was the strong one in their relationship. It was strange seeing their roles reversed.
"And she tried to fight him unarmed." said Chad from behind me.
"She what...?" cried both Damien and Lizzy together.
"Thanks." said Rose sarcastically to Chad, making a face.
Now she saw Lizzy getting angry. That's more Lizzy, thought Rose with a smile.
"Rosaline Lily Stephens, don't make me regret bringing you here. I should have let you get married to Marcus. He is so boring, nothing ever would have happened to you."
"You got engaged?" asked Chad, sitting down beside her on the floor.
"Almost. She feigned fainting to get out of it." said Lizzy
Chad started laughing hard. Rose's mood lightened too. Suddenly Lizzy started explaining my proposal fleeing endeavours.
"Poor man. I feel bad for him you know."
"Don't. That's what I've done all these years and that is why I am running now, unable to break his heart."
Chad looked at Rose seriously and said,"But don't you think he deserves to know what you feel about him? He should know what you feel. May be you are in luck and he feels the same way."
He was talking about Marcus but it seemed funny how that advice would be apt for what she felt for him as well.
"Um I... don't know." said Rose, not knowing what to answer.
Chad just shrugged his shoulders and stood up.
She turned to look at Liz, who was looking at her like she would burst out laughing anytime.
Rose just rolled her eyes and decided to go upstairs and take a shower.
As she stepped out of the bathroom, she saw Chad sitting on his bed, reading a book. The room had been tossed and turned by the forensic team and the message on the wall was still bright and clear. A shiver ran through her spine when she looked at it. At the time of the attack, the adrenaline rush in her system stopped her from dwelling on the reality of the situation, but now everything seemed even more daunting as the sun had set.
"I wanted to talk to you in private." said Chad, putting down his book. He had a grim expression. Rose guessed whatever he was about to say couldn't be good.
"You should sit down. And whatever I say, don't react immediately, give it a minute, think it through." He stood up and locked his door before sitting beside her.
His demeanour, the suspense was killing her. Rose didn't know what to expect.
"Ok."
"Good." he said. It seemed he too was dreading this talk. What could it be?
"You need to be put in a safe house."
"What?" Rose shouted.
"Shh! We can't tell them." he said looking at the door.
"What?" whispered Rose.
"See, I will text Damien when we leave. He knows the procedure. This was a hitman you angered Rose."
"So now this is my fault?" Rose couldn't believe him. Was he out of his mind?
"This is the reaction I was talking about. What did I say? Give it a thought, don't panic."
"I am not panicking." she said.
"I can see that. Look Rose, he was no ordinary goon but an assassin who was insulted having been bested by a woman. You aren't safe. Here drink some water." He made her drink some water, patting her on the back.
"I can't leave like that. I have my mom and my work.""Everyone would be informed about your absence and it's necessity. I am sure your mom would understand. By staying, you would endanger all the people around you." said Chad carefully, dreading another outburst.
But Rose closed her eyes, counting from ten to one slowly, trying to calm herself.
"When?" asked Rose in a calm voice. She had no choice. She didn't want her family and friends to get hurt because of her. Everything seemed surreal as if in a dream or a movie. Things like these didn't happen to normal people.
Why me, thought Rose sadly.
"Tonight." said Chad.
Why me????????? Thought Rose again.
"Do you need help packing?" asked Chad, concerned by her sudden change of demeanour.
"I never unpacked." she said and left the room.
—————————————————————————————————-"Yes sir. The house is ready." said Chad. Detective Coleman had called him.
"Good. Please go through the usual procedure. Confiscate all electronic devices, GPS trackers or any other traceable items."
"Yes sir."
"We'll find him son. Don't worry."
"I wish I was able to help you with the case."
"No you can't. I told you. You are too close to the case. You were a witness. Jefferson will pick you up at 1 o'clock."
—————————————————————————————————
It was almost one o'clock and both Damien and Lizzy had gone to bed. Rose was sitting in the living room, getting bored. Chad had taken away her phone, iPad, Apple Watch and all chargers and headphones. She had nothing to contact her family with. She had called her mom about an hour ago, explaining her the circumstances. Chad had also spoken with her, convincing her to accept her daughter's absence. Rose wasn't sure, when she'll be able to meet her again.
Her thoughts were interrupted by footsteps, which were Chad's. He was carrying a suitcase himself.
"Whose is that?" asked Rose.
"Mine."
"Yours?"
"Oh! I forgot to mention. I am also being put in a safe house with you."
WHAT THE FUCK! Despite the dire situation, a small part of Rose was doing cartwheels of joy at the thought of being locked up in a safe house with Chad Hunter.
They heard a car driving up Chad's driveway and Chad picked up Rose's duffel bag.
"I can carry it." she said trying to take her bag.
"Don't worry. I'll take care of it." he said with a wink.
Why God? Why was he so gorgeous and adorable at the same time?
