I slept over at Claire's house until Monday came, aka the first day of my job. I was nervous, obviously. What if I mess up the chords, I panicked, what if I don't KNOW the chords of Claire's songs? Claire turned around to face me, trying to wear her hoodie. "Don't be nervous.", Claire smiled, "I'll be there." I too smiled, "Thank you." "Also,", she continued, "are you gonna..talk to Mike about the..dating policy?" I sighed, "It's kinda stupid but I'll do it anyway." She slowly pulls me into her. "That's a good girl.", she whispered while fixing my hair. Claire kissed my cheek and grabbed her car keys. "Come on, we don't got all day!"
As we arrived at the studio, my heart pounded faster and faster. We went inside and immediately got greeted by David. "Ahh!", he yelled, "Rosy! I'm so glad you auditioned! We were terribly sad when our old guitarist, Haley, quit. But now..", he hugged me tightly, "we have YOU!" I nervously started laughing, "Yeah, but I'm probably not gonna be as good as her." "Now, now, don't you say that!", David smirked, "You have to meet the other people, come along now!" "Uh, okay!", I said. We were walking across the halls until we saw 4 people sitting down with Sprites in their hands.
"Hey, guys!", David said to them. "David!", everyone said. "We have a new guitarist,", he grabbed me by the shoulders and pushed me to greet them. "her name is Rosy!" I started sweating, "Hi. I'm Rosy and I'm glad to be apart of this team." One of them got up and started shaking my hand. "Heyo! I'm Eddie, the drummer.", he smiled. The rest of them decided to get up too. "I'm Dijon, the bass player.", the one with a black hoodie said. "I'm Jimmy, one of the managers.", the guy in shorts smiled. There are two managers? Why didn't Claire tell me that? "And I'm Mike, one of the managers too." I gulped. There he is. Claire entered the room and put her arms on my shoulders. "Welcome to the team, Rosy!", she smiled. Everyone started whooping and clapping.
Being Claire's guitarist was so much fun. It was easy to get along with the others, except for Mike. Mike was....tough. He didn't seem to like me that much. Maybe I should talk to Jimmy about the dating policy. "Hey, Claire.", I said. "Yeah?" "I'm gonna go talk to Jimmy about the dating policy." "Go for it!", she smiled. Honestly, all of this was just stupid. Why couldn't I date the one I loved? I knocked on Jimmy's door. "Come in!", his sweet voice sang. I opened the door and he was holding a drum stick. Next to him was Eddie. "What's up, Rosy?", Jimmy smiled. "Hi! Uh, can we talk...privately?", I asked him. "Uhm, sure. By the way, you're amazing at playing the guitar! And you learned the chords to Softly so easily too." "Thanks!", I said.
We went into the unisex bathroom and locked the door, which was...awkward. I turned around and immediately started speaking, "Can you tell me about some rules about this workplace, specifically....the dating policy?" Jimmy started giggling. "So you like someone that works here?" "No, well-I- just please tell me about it.", I stuttered. "Alright.", he began. "Back when Claire started her career, Mike and I made a rule about dating. You're not allowed to date anyone because if they break up, it could ruin their performance because they're sad or something and can't work efficiently. Or they could be oh so madly in love they stop working as hard as they used to."
"But I will work hard, I swear!", I protested. "So you DO like someone! Is it Dijon? Eddie?", he laughed. I covered my mouth, I just exposed myself..kinda. "Is there just any way we can work this out?", I whispered. "Tell me who you like first, then I'll tell ya." I turned red, "What? No way!" "Okay, then I'm outta here.", he unlocked the door. "CLAIRE!", I blurted out. "I like..Claire." His eyes widened. "So you're in love with the singer? Singer plus guitarist. Wonder how that'll work again.", he sighed. "Again? What do you mean by that?", I asked. He covered his mouth. "Dang it.", he whispered. "Okay, so Mike and I did make a no dating policy...but not when Claire began her career.
"What?!", I said confused. "There was no dating policy at all at the beginning. So that's when Haley, our old guitarist, started dating Claire." "Claire didn't tell me that.", I gasped. "And there's a reason why.", Jimmy replied. He continued, "They were madly in love, but they still got their work done, so I was impressed. And that's when Claire made a song about her called Bags." "She even made a song about her?", I questioned. What if Claire is still in love with Haley? I thought. "Haley loved the song. She would get so excited when they played it during the concerts. But then they got all caught up with work, they would never talk to each other or hang out because of it. I insisted on giving them a 2-5 week break together, but they refused."
Why would they refuse, I thought, it's a 2-5 week break! "After that, the relationship wasn't doing so well.", he said. "How so?", I asked. "They became..toxic to each other. It was like they hated each other. So that's when they broke up but..we all knew they still loved each other, but they couldn't date again or else the same situation would happen again. Haley didn't wanna see Claire's face anymore, so she left." Jimmy sighed then took out his phone. "Right when Haley was about to leave, I recorded myself singing. In the middle, I heard screams and shouts from both Haley and Claire outside. Here, take a look." His phone showed him with an acoustic guitar covering Let My Baby Stay by Mac DeMarco. Jimmy skipped to the middle, and that's when I heard the screaming.
"PLEASE HALEY, DON'T GO I STILL LOVE YOU!", Claire shouted. An unfamiliar voice began speaking, probably Haley's. "I know, I love you too but we can't do this. I'll hurt you and you'll hurt me." "Haley please don't leave. You can still work here!", Claire begged. "I can't. Just seeing your face makes me hurt.", Haley replied. All I could see in the video was Jimmy's shocked face. Then, I heard a car door slam, then Claire's voice. "PLEASE! JUST ONE MORE KISS? PLEASE? HALEY JUST ONE MORE KISS PLEASE I LOVE YOU!" There was silence after that, Haley already left. In the video, Jimmy uncovered his face and stopped the recording.
Jimmy turned off his phone and began, "I probably should delete that video." "Yeah.", I agreed. "And that's when we made the dating policy. We just don't want that to happen again.", he sighed. Would that happen to me? I thought. Would the same exact situation happen to me? I mean, Claire did love her. She loved her so much that she made a whole ass song. But in the end, they ended up hurt.
After work, I decided to visit an ice cream shop. Right when I opened my car door, I heard a voice. "So..what happened?" I gasped, it was Claire. "Oh um..nothing really. He just said no." I didn't want her to know that I knew what happened between her and Haley. "So, we can't date?", she asked. "I don't know. I'll beg later this week.", I lied. "Yayy!", she screeched. Claire ran up and hugged me tightly. Did I even want to be in a relationship with Claire? Well, yes obviously but I don't want that situation to happen. Does she know any better? "So you wanna sleepover again?", she asked. "Eh, not today. I kinda miss my home.", I again lied. I didn't miss my home, I just didn't want to grow more feelings for her. The more feelings I have for her, the more I want to date her.
