Dark Paradise - Chapter 1 - Cherry
Cobalt lines sliced across the darkening sky, stemming thick rumbles of what felt like rocks tumbling at your car stiffened your muscles, back straightened in a natural format. You played with the tips of your fingers, joints clicking rather grotesquely mostly due to how restless you'd become. "I don't remember this being on the guide Mark, are you sure this is the right way?" You eyed the guy in the driver's seat beside you, his hair soft like dandelion wisps, narrow feline eyes shading a tone of ebony as he bit his bottom lip, the soft curve turning almost white at the action before residing in a faded Magnolia. "I could've sworn I took the left." He contemplated, eyebrows ticking up in frustration. You tapped your fingers against his thigh, chuckling ever so quietly as the rhythm of a nursery rhyme hummed from your lips, the feeling of his stiff denim jeans static under your nails. "And I suppose you also didn't take that detour for donuts a mile back?" Your voice a gentle tease, lips pressing against the smooth skin of his cheek.
"I think we're lost angel." He sighed, the car slowing down slightly. "I think so too baby." You joked, huddling closer to him as he ran a hand through his hair, paying close attention to the road before the two of you, the rain continuing to caress the glass pane. "we should pull over and call someone, we don't know these roads." Your voice was firm, yet welcoming. "We can't stop now, the storms getting worse and soon you'll be nagging me for cuddles." You rolled your eyes, playing with the bracelet around his wrist as you shut your eyes. The small, square beads brought back so many memories, it was the epitome of youth back then, parties, late nights under the cantering stars, you'd remembered the day you'd hand crafted them together, intertwining the magenta thread with saffron, the beads coming last with your initials. You knew back then just as you did now, the boy from two streets down would carve feelings into your heart alike no other, he was the love of your life after all.
Your high school sweetheart.
A sudden jolt sent your head flying forward, the stiff fabric of your seatbelt knifing into your chest as your palms reached out for the dashboard, the skin almost breaking from such astringent contact. You let out a soft whimper, teeth clattering like delicate China. "Hey, look at me, are you okay?" Mark unplugged his belt, taking your face in his hands as if it were a jewel, examining it how your mother would when you grazed your knee in the hot summertime. "I'm fine, what happened?" Your eyebrows furrow in confusion, a picture of worry in your eyes. You recounted the moments before, the way the rain had become a prominent pain on the looking glass ahead, blurring it until the up and coming night had become a disfigured image, something of an abstract portrait you'd seen once in a movie. "I'm so sorry, I don't know what it was, I'm so, so sorry, are you sure you're not hurt?" He fondled at your jaw, rubbing his forehead against yours in a natural palette of protectiveness.
After multiple round checks of your structure, he sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose with a pinch of his fingers. "I'm going to see what we hit, stay here okay?" You practically squeal, eyes enlarging with his potent words. "Are you crazy? We don't know what's out there, this isn't our home Mark." You shiver, this place was anywhere but home. Cold, isolated, desolate. "It'll just be for a moment; it was probably a tree or something." He leaned back, hand gripping the metal handle. "Wait." You claw at his puffed windbreaker in anticipation, "I'm coming with you." He nods hesitantly, the two of you unleashing a storm of salty droplets as they drown your hair, ashen grey forming between your vision as the fog sweeps your surroundings. "Oh gosh." Your stomach flips at the sight, there before your feet lay an undoubtedly large deer, antlers brittle as the lay in a puddle of vermilion, a garnet slash scorching its abdomen. "We need to get back in the car." The two of you rush back almost immediately, locking your doors.
You watch as he jams the keys into their ignition, cursing the entire alphabet when the burning fuel shuts off. "The tires are flat Mark; we're not going anywhere in this car." He reaches for his phone in tandem to you, stress forming in your gut as you stare into the unresponsive black glow. "This can't be happening right now." You choke on your words, tapping violently at the screen before you.
