Dear, Sincerely,

"Hi Peter," Bethany said softly, her breath puffing out of her mouth. Peter was sitting on the bench with his elbows on his knees, hands clasped, looking at his feet. "Peter, say something."

"Why do you need to move?" He frowned looking up at me. Bethany sighed because of Peter, he just looked so sad.

"I told you already, I got offered a job," Bethany said trying to reason with him. She sat down next to him and wrapped her arms around him gingerly. "I need this job, so I accepted it." Bethany sighed, knowing that she didn't want to leave, yet she had to. She needed to pay off her college loans and this job pays very well.

"What about us?" Peter said rather angrily. "I'm your best friend, you can't just leave me." His words made Bethany flinch, but she disguised it with a shiver. He got up and started walking away from her.

"Peter. Peter! Peter!" Bethany called after him almost tripping in her boots. She caught up to him and pulled him around to look at her. A stray piece of black hair fell over Bethany's brown eyes and Peter reached down to brush it back. "Peter, I'm not going to throw this friendship all away." Bethany's voice cracked a bit at the word 'friendship', but Peter did not seem to notice.

"Then what are we going to do?" He sighed, as if apologizing for lashing out, "You're going to be in Texas and I'm staying here in NorCal." He ran his hand through his raven black hair in frustration and threw his head back.

"There's only one thing," Bethany whispered, hoping he would catch what she's saying. Her fingers nervously played with the buttons of hercoat. He looked at her with a confused look before grasping what she said.

"Bethany," He sighed. Yet Bethany felt content, "It's not gonna work."

"Peter, we can make it work," She sighed. "We're not like everyone else,"

"How are we gonna communicate?" He said furrowing his eyebrows, which made her burst into a fit of laughter. "Bethany! Why are you laughing?" He was giving her a puppy dog pout now, which just made her giggle even more.

"Listen to yourself Peter," She grinned as her knit beanie slipped a bit off her head, ""How are we gonna communicate?" Peter, it's 2012. We have computers and phones and social media."

  "Yeah, but-" He started.

"Yeah, but what?" She asked raising her eyebrow.

"I want to do it the old fashion way," He gave her a sheepish grin, not even trying to hide his blush. He adjusted her beanie back to its original position, "Like sending letters instead of email, like real Pen Pals, but we could still video chat and stuff."

"Yeah, that'd be nice," Bethany smiled. "Now come on, we gotta get coffee at the Java Chip before I leave tomorrow."

"Ok, but I still don't like the idea of you leaving," Peter pouted as he began to walk down the block to get coffee. Bethany's hand was left swinging alone at her side, waiting for a hand to hold that would never come.

They sipped their coffee quietly enjoying each other's company, yet Bethany still yearned for Peter's hand in hers. By now all of the birds have migrated south, leaving only some seagulls squaking overhead. She stole a glace at Peter as he watched the ocean, and still couldn't bear to see him this way.

"Peter, it's getting late, I need to go," Bethany sighed standing up, knowing that she didn't want to leave him.

"Bethany," He sighed, "I'll walk you back,"

She didn't say a word, knowing if she objected, he would still follow her back to her apartment. They walked in silence, Bethany gave a thankful sigh knowing that their apartments are close together, so Peter didn't have to walk far by himself.

"So I guess this is goodbye," Bethany uttered as sher stood in front of the door.

"No, it's not," Peter whispered, "We will be sending letters, there is no goodbye." Bethany smiled softly at him, knowing he was right. He pulled her into a warm hug and Bethany suddenly felt at home. The pressure of his body agaisnt hers, the familiar smell of Peter's cologne, and his arms around her just felt right to Bethany.

"I'll miss you," Bethanysaid looking into his eyes.

  "Me too," Peter whispered.
