The door being held wide open would be enough of a sign that they've overstayed their welcome.
They only need to take a couple more steps to be out of my office—and my hair—but the lady won't stop talking.
I shift on my feet, wiggling my oxygen-deprived toes enclosed within my black kitten heels. My hand is still wrapped around the knob of my office door as I hold it open for this lady, her husband and their little son to exit after a long hour of sharing—from their side of course.
All the while, I maintain the professional curve on my lips, nodding and replying to the lady's redundant questions regarding our next therapy session.
Transferring my weight to my left hip, I start tapping my right foot on the light brown carpet, the almost indiscernible movement generating barely audible thuds in sync with the second-hand ticking on my watch. By then, my palm had already grown sweaty from gripping the door knob too tightly.
Besides it being way past my usual working hours, I've exceeded my quota for listening to troubled thoughts and problematic relationships for the day. Now, all I want is some peace and quiet.
Or in simpler terms—a time. Out.
But I resist the urge to look down at my watch as I count down the seconds until I can finally reconcile with my favourite companion—solitude.
After the lady finally ends her series of questions, the trio cross the threshold out of my office. I internally raise my arms up to the sky, praising the Lord for his mercy. Just when I'm about to shut the door, their son turns back to peer at me, looking as though he wants to say something.
I dip my chin and smile tightly before forcing myself to say something out of courtesy, "Goodbye, Harry. I'll see you soon, alright?"
I wasn't expecting hugs and kisses, but at least a standard farewell response right? Instead, what I receive are two unexpected syllables.
Blinking twice, I lean forward slightly with raised brows, giving him the benefit of the doubt. "Excuse me?"
And so, the little demon obediently repeats his words.
"Fuck. You."
Well that's a hell of a way to conclude my day—such positive vibes.
If things were different, I would definitely do something about this ill-mannered brat. But I can only suck it up, put on a calm front and smile like I just won the lottery.
