Sing

My room was dark, the only illumination being the moonlight peeking between the blinds in front of my window. They cast streaks of light across my bed and up the wall, shifting in brightness as clouds crossed the full moon above. I lay on the bed, letting the light shift across my legs.

I had been using the soft glow to stare into my gem, now shimmering on the back of my hand. It's appearance had changed with the change of the soul gem into the Black Orb. It didn't shine the same as the others did, and everyone definitely seemed suspicious of it. Their suspicion wasn't entirely undue. I slid my finger across the top of it, feeling the texture it left on my skin. I then brushed my hair behind my ear and allowed it to take its main form of my earring.

It was then that my phone started ringing, breaking the silence and giving me a small jolt. I glanced at the time on the clock on the wall. 11:50pm. Who could be calling me?

I rolled over and grabbed my phone off my nightstand, squinting at the lit up caller-ID. Madoka was calling me at almost midnight! I quickly sat up, tucking my legs underneath me, and flipped my phone open to answer.

"Madoka, it's almost midnight, is something wrong?"

"A-Ah, Homura!"

At the sound of her voice, I realized she didn't seem stressed or in trouble. I relaxed a little.

"Shouldn't you be asleep already?" I smiled a little, still happy that she decided to call me. It was nice to hear her sweet voice over the speaker.

She gave a small hesitant giggle. "I... couldn't sleep. It's been a while since we just stayed home at night instead of fighting wraiths. I'm a little restless, I guess. Are you sure this is okay?"

"You can trust me, Madoka. We all worked hard the other day, we can take a break. Wraith activity won't be as high tonight. You should get some rest."

A small sigh crackled through the speaker of my phone, and it made me smile a little more. I could totally picture her pout, unsure of what I claimed, but I knew she wouldn't argue about it with me.

"If you say so... I still can't sleep, though. Could you..." she hesitated, before deciding to continue. "Could you sing to me, Homura?"

I blinked. Sing? Have... have I ever sang? Except as required in school, of course, but. How would she even know I was any good? "Sing? Sing what?"

"Anything. Sing me a lullaby. I like hearing your voice."

"Hmm..."

"Please, Homura?"

Being taken completely off guard by all this, I had no idea what to sing. Then I remembered that theme song she had been humming to herself for a while. "Fine then, how about the theme song to 'My Waltz Melody?'"

I heard a small gasp, then a giggle. "I would love that, Homura!"

Despite the pink in my cheeks, and the irony being in the demon of this world singing an anime theme song to a girl to help her sleep... I began. The lyrics were super cheesy, all about love and harmony, and I surprised myself with knowing most of the words. I stumbled only a few times, causing a few suppressed giggles from Madoka. However, I made it all the way to the end.

"That was lovely, Homura."

"I don't really believe you, but thank you anyways." I couldn't help but smile through the embarrassment.

"I feel a lot better now. Thank you."

I glanced at the clock, now reading 12:10am. "You should really sleep. We still have school tomorrow. Tomorrow night we're going back to fight the wraiths again, too."

"I will. I'm glad you were the last voice I heard before I went to sleep tonight. Goodnight, Homura. Sweet dreams."

I let her hang up, before I took the phone away from my ear and closed it.

Things have been strange and difficult since I rearranged the universe, but it was moments like these that made it all worth it. Before, I wished to turn back time to fix the mistakes I had made. Now, though, I wouldn't change my decision no matter what. This was my universe now, and I wanted Madoka in it. Forever.
