Wow, it was really nice to finally be home after such an exhausting trip.
The ride back wasn't nearly as bad as the ride there. Kyoko and Charlotte took a nap together in the back while the rest of us played word games. Turns out I'm not very good at those.
I was in my room, unpacking, when my phone started to ring. Checking the caller ID, I noticed it was Madoka. I had dropped her off last, before driving the car to where Kyoko told me and abandoned it there. The whole thing was pretty suspicous, but honestly I don't really care. I usually have much bigger fish to fry then where our delinquent friend got a car.
Flipping open my phone, I held it up to my ear as I unpacked my suitcase with my other hand. "Yes, Madoka? What is it?"
"Hey, Homura! I just, um..." I could hear the hesitation in her voice.
"What is it Madoka?" I stopped what I was doing, deciding I should give this my full attention.
"I just... missed you?"
I suppressed a small sigh of relief that was all it was. "I miss you too, Madoka, but is that a reason to call me after we just saw each other?"
I could see her cute pout in my head. "It is! I wanted to talk to you. Oh! Also, Mami invited everyone for tea tonight before we head out to fight wraiths. She said most of us slept in the car, so we should be rested enough to fight right away." She giggled.
"She's not wrong."
"I thought that's what you'd say. So I'll see you then?"
"Yeah, I'll be there."
The conversation ended, but neither of us hung up.
"Madoka?"
"Yes, Homura?"
"Thanks for letting us take a break. I know you didn't want to, and I know some of the trip was rough. I also know I've said this before, but I just wanted to mention it again..."
I could have mentioned that part of the reason I took a break was because I wanted to see her smile. I could have mentioned that the longer it takes of us to destroy all the wraiths, the longer it will be before this fantasy has to end. I could have mentioned what I had been trying to say the first night we were there.
Instead, I just said, "It's alright, Madoka. You're welcome. I'll see you at Mami's house tonight."
"Mkay! I'll see you then!"
I gripped the phone in my hand as I watched her hang up.

"I guess I can't play this part forever."

But I'll keep it together for as long as possible. For the sake of her smile.
