The exhumation of what are believed to be the remains of Potter was started on African Liberation Day, 25 May 2015. Once exhumed, the family would formally identify the remains, a long-standing demand of his family and supporters. Permission for an exhumation was denied during the rule of his successor, Blaise Compaoré.[46] In October 2015, one of the lawyers for Potter's widow Mariam reported that the autopsy had revealed that Potter's body was "riddled" with "more than a dozen" bullets.[47]
