"What are you doing tomorrow, Brix? It's the weekend." Lily said as she quoted the word weekend with her fingers. I don't really go out on weekends so I was thinking...
"I know what you're thinking, you'll just be at home aren't you?" Lily asked.
"Why'd you ask if you know, Lil?" I laughed. She's been my best friend since the day my parents decided to move to U.S. and there was never a day she wasn't in my house. She is always so goofy that she's the only one that can ever make me laugh. I don't know, I just can't explain why I'm fond with her-- maybe because she became a friend when no one else did.
"Oh come on, Brixie! You're the most popular girl in school, and you don't even go to parties? You suck girl!" She looked at me crossing her arms as if she's going to kill me. Lily is the outgoing one, she's friends with everybody. She goes to parties on weekends and kills herself with books on weekdays.
"I'm not popular Lil."
"Hi, Brixie." William greeted as he passed by me and Lily.
"Oh yeah? I guess you're not really popular that even the popular Korean guy knows you. Yeah, you really aren't." Lily sarcastically replied but I just laughed and shrugged it off.
I brought my car with me and since Lily and I are neighbors, she's with me.
"You know, I'm really lucky that you're my best friend and you have a car." She smiled and leaned on the seat, making herself really comfortable.
"Shut up, Lil." I giggled.
The ride back home only took twenty minutes since the school is really near our place. I parked my car and I saw my mom watering the flowers she planted.
"Hi Mom." I hugged her.
"How's school, darling?" She asked as she finishes her task.
"Boring?" I laughed. I took off my shoes and opened the door to our house when my mom called me and said,
"Go and fix yourself up, Brixie. My best friend just moved here and she's throwing a housewarming party. She invited me and said I should bring you and your pops." Mom always mentions her best friend to me, she said her best friend lives in England but I guess she moved here.
"Is she in our neighborhood?" I asked Mom. I'm too excited to meet her, I feel like I can have both of them as my mom.
"Yeah, she lives five blocks from us, love." Wow, she's really near.
I went up to my room and picked out a nice dress and a jacket for me, since it's cold outside. I didn't have time to take a shower. I'm too lazy today so I only put on powder and lip balm to finish my prep. I was about to go down stairs when I heard my phone ring and that's when I realized that I left it. Dumb me.
*Lily calling*
"Brixxxxx!!! Have you heard? There's a new boy in town. I searched for his ig and I found it! He's really hot!" Lily yelled over the phone.
"Lily! First, you need to calm down. It's as if he's gonna notice you. Plus, you have a boyfriend Lil." I said. I don't understand why she has to tell me this, I'm not even interested.
"Duh, I only told you this because I want you to hook up with him. You've been single all your life for Pete's sake, you old woman." Lily said as she laughed at me for being single all my life.
"For your information, Ms. Denver, I'm nineteen and--" I was halted by my mother calling me downstairs, telling me to hurry up.
"I'll call you later, Lil. We're going somewhere. We're not done with this..."
"Whatever, Brix." She laughed.
I picked up my bag and went downstairs, where I saw my mom wearing her favorite yellow dress and my pops wearing his white polo shirt. I smiled as I look at them both taking care of each other. I've never seen such genuine love. My mom buttoned pops' shirt as my pops brushed my mother's hair. I was jealous. I was jealous for a moment. Jealous that I also want to experience such genuine love.
"Oh my, my princess is so beautiful." Pops said as he went and hugged me. My papa has always been the clingy one, he's always the one that I can talk to when I'm in trouble or if I have problems.
"Thanks pops." I smiled. I love them both, and I never want to trade them for anything.
As what my mom said, her best friend's house was only five blocks away, so my pops suggested that it is a great idea to walk. Well, it turned out, that it never was. The walk took ten minutes to be exact. I don't know about you but it was really tiring for me.
We finally arrived at mom's best friend's house. She rang the doorbell and waited for someone to open the door for us. A kid around ten to twelve went ahead and opened it, and there I saw mom's best friend. She's really beautiful.
"Maddy!" She squealed as she hugged mom with pure excitement. Mom immediately hugged her back and literally jumped for joy. I've never seen her eyes sparkle like that.
"Wow, it's been nineteen years." Mom said with tears in her eyes. I felt so happy, so happy that I can't help but cry too. My mom finally met her best friend that was apart for nineteen years, that must have been so hard. I can't imagine how that'll affect me when Lily's out of my league.
"And you must be Brixie." Mom's friend said, as she slowly walked towards me.
"Yes, I am. It's really nice to finally meet you Tita." I said as she hugged me so tight like she has been missing me for a long time.
"I remember how you were really so tiny back then. I can even carry you with just one hand." She smiled. Her eyes were really deep, like you can see through her.
"I'm Becca." She followed. I've only just realized, that mom never really did mention her name to me and I even wondered more as to why I never asked her name, but now I'm just happy that I finally met the girl behind my mom's goofy side.
* * * *
It was eight in the evening and everyone was at the dinner table when the rain started to pour outside. Everyone was enjoying the meal when the little kid asked Tita Becca about something,
"I wonder where kuya has been, mommy. Will he not be home?" The kid asked. His mom smiled at him and patted his head, as if she was telling him that his kuya will be home anytime soon. Everyone was busy eating, when I decided to have a little stroll around the living room. I've seen a lot of structures and pictures of their family and I noticed that there were four of them in their family, maybe he was the kuya that the little kid mentioned a while ago.
"Brixie, darling?" I heard my mom called out for me.
"Yes mom?" I asked as I slowly approached her. I saw her reaching something in her bag that was under her chair.
"I'm really sorry to ask you in this situation, darling, but can you go get the car? I don't think the rain will stop tonight." My pops continued, smiling at me with a sorry face.
"It's okay pops." I smiled. My pops doesn't like rain, and this must be a silly punishment as to why he suggested that walking was a great idea to get here. Pops continued his meal as I waited for mom to give me the keys to our house.
Pops and Tita Becca's husband were talking to each other when the front door opened and we all heard a voice.
"I'm home, Mom. I'm sorry I came too late. I was having a hard time finding things for my room." Says a young man slowly walking to where we were. I was waiting for the keys so I wasn't paying attention to who that young man was until mom gave me what I needed and I looked.
I stopped and stared for a bit, totally astounded by the sight I'm seeing right now. A boy, around five feet ten inches, has a long hair, white skin, kinda has chinky eyes that looked really cute on him. I'm not saying I like him already, he's just really... good looking.
