Quarantine

The new year arrives with its refreshing flair
Hope, ambition and motivation are all anew
The world carries on without a single care
Like its always been, forgetting those on the brew

As we advance through our routine monotony
Fear is sensed as rumours of war arise
But we must continue on despite impending tragedy
For that stubborn persistence alone could be our demise

Oh how we love to stay informed through our magic mirrors
Giving us the diary of a world at the tip of a touch
As gods, we're careless spectators of our suffering neighbours
For compassion and sympathy, to many is asking for much

Functioning as a turning mill, never envisioning a stop
Steadily forwarding preceding antics and tradition
As crabs in a bucket, all we do is strive for the top
For increasing gain outweighs a looming contagion

Suddenly, the seemingly far train is now at our terminus
Leaving us scrambling for ways to handle its load
An originally harmless package now garnering our focus
Keeping in is now sole priority, for this knows no area code

As a new reality settles, many become restless
Itching for lost habits as our battle is fought
As birds in a cage our world becomes a mess
For we are forced to face our daily thoughts

Advancement and progress seem to fleet away
As we act no different from days of old
Are we nothing but a looping cassette on play?
Have we no purpose if not what we're told?

In a time where raw instincts take over civility
Animals we are at base, for we teach and protect our kin
Unable to determine a forecast of stability
Such is the new life of a world stuck in quarantine.
