My summer started off like any typical seventeen-year-old except I'm not your typical seventeen-year-old I've been through more than most my age. But I won't get into that just yet anyway; my summer job; fast food. What a joy I thought "I get to spend my entire summer indoors." I was bummed but needed the money to fund my summer plans the few I got to have. My summer took an interesting turn and it all started with a phone call late one Friday night.
It was the last Friday of May and I had no plans. I felt like such a loser what happened to my last summer of fun before college? That's when my phone rang, I didn't know the number but I picked it up anyway. "Hello?" I tentatively asked. "Hey what's up? You want to hang out?" asked a vaguely familiar voice. "Who is this?" I asked inquisitively. "Please tell me you recognize your cousins voice a-hole" came a very sarcastic reply and I knew exactly who it was at that point. "Kiara oh my god! I haven't talked to you in forever! What's going on? Yes, I want to hang out! When can you pick me up? I'm dying of boredom!" I heard her hearty laugh into the phone and she quickly responded "I'll be there in fifteen love ya cuz" and at that she hung up.
I didn't know it then but at the moment my life took a turn I never saw coming. Little did I know this was the beginning of a bigger story one that would change my life forever. When she showed up about fifteen minutes later, I was nervous and excited all at the same time. I walked out the door and heard her talking to someone and I thought oh what joy. I hate meeting new people.
I climbed into the backseat of her car and she introduced the stranger as Jasper. After seeing him I thought well he's pretty cute. Shaggy brown hair, a goatee, and a huge grin. He seemed pretty cool but only the night could tell. I was nervous most of the night, I wasn't sure what to say. I didn't want to look like I wasn't cool enough to hang out with them. I mean it wasn't like I had friends I could fall back on.
At some point we wound up at the parking lot to the mall in the next town. There had been some small talk but nothing too serious. As soon as Kiara parked, she turned to me and in the most serious tone I had ever heard her use ask "Do you smoke pot?" I stared at her in disbelief did she just ask me Blossom, straight A student, the girl who never talked to people and graduated high-school her junior year, if she smoked pot! I began stuttering over my words "No, I mean, not like I ever got a chance to do anything like that in school." "Well would you want to try? Because if you, do I have some Blue Dream and you will feel so good afterwards." she earnestly said to me. "Well maybe, wouldn't we get caught smoking her in the open like this? And how would we smoke it?" I felt dumb for inquiring the last part but I honestly didn't know. She laughed that hearty laugh again and said "Don't worry I got you." At that she pulled out of the parking space.
She drove for about ten minutes and then pulled into the parking lot to a set of apartments. At that point I was scared, there was no way I was going to smoke pot in such a populated destination. She quickly parked. As soon as she did, I told her "I'm over this, it's already an illegal drug and this is way too big of an apartment complex to not get caught." She laughed as she was filling her pipe and just told me "Calm down chicka I smoked here all summer, it's a nice place, so the cops never look here. Now just take a hit or pass but me and Jasper are going to hotbox the car so if you don't even want to breath it. You can sit outside the car for a few minutes while we smoke." She handed me the pipe and a lighter. I brought the pipe to my lips, fired the flame, and felt the smoke fill my lungs.
As I slowly exhaled, I whispered "Damn." Kiara chuckled at my response. I passed the pipe to Kiaras friend Jasper and watched as he inhaled his first drag as Kiara called it. He then proceeded to cough his lungs out before passing the pipe to Kiara. Then it was my turn again and we repeated this cycle of hit, cough, pass until the bowl was empty. I felt extremely light headed and freeing like there was no longer a weight on my shoulders and I couldnt stop smiling. Then I started laughing and I couldnt stop laughing I probably laughed for a good five minutes before I stopped. "I never would have guessed as a kid playing together at grandma's house that this is where our lives would be. Sitting here at an apartment complex on a Friday night smoking pot. D.A.R.E me would be frowning right about now." I finally concluded. Kiara busted up laughing and Jasper just looked at me inquisitively.
Kiara took off driving and it didnt take long before Jasper spoke up "Anyone else hungry because I'm starving." Kiara laughed "When are you not hungry Jasper." "Yeah, yeah, yeah the munchies got me bad tonight let's go get some McDonalds. Sound good to you Blossom?" Jasper asked me. "Dude yes food I feel like I haven't eaten in days." I responded giggling. The closer we got to McDonalds the more nervous I got there was no way I could socialize right now I was too high and the thought sent me into a panic. I finally spoke up "Please tell me we are not going inside I cannot people like this no way." Kiara laughed and responded "No way I dont people when I'm high but it does get easier with time."
With that I returned my gaze to the window barely aware of being at the McDonalds and getting our food. When I finally started returning to reality, I asked Kiara if we could go to a park or something and just chill for a bit. She agreed while driving off into the night.
