Chapter Six: Meeting

A week passes by since you and Toshinori start actively trying for a baby.

Since then, you'd had more in-depth discussions on what the decision meant as well planned Toshinori's career path now that he was slowly, but surely, phasing out of the Hero life. It might have been tedious work, but with a hypothetical child in mind, it was agreed that now was possibly the best time to sort out your living situation as well as other essentials.

If Nezu approved your idea, Toshinori would start applying for a special license to teach Hero informatics by next summer. On your part, you had already keyed in a few appointments with Chiyo to track your hormone balance now that you'd stopped taking birth control. All in all, you would describe the progress you'd both been making as slow if not exciting all the same.

Fishing your phone out of your jacket pocket, you quickly shoot a message to Naomasa before settling in your seat.

After partaking in some strenuous activities the previous night, you and Toshinori had cleared most of your schedule for the day; with your only meeting you'd left being with Naomasa in a cafe in downtown Tokyo. Toshinori, unsurprisingly, had chosen to keep his meeting with David in the afternoon (a decision you were certain had been because it was via video call). For that reason alone, you cursed your husband and the fact he got to stay in bed for his online meeting.

"Thank you for waiting for me, (Y/N)-san - I hope you weren't waiting long." Lips curling, you shake your head as you turn (e/c) to your colleague. In contrast to your (t/c) and pretty casual clothing, Naomasa wore his usual white dress shirt and khaki pants combination; his famously long trench coat placed on the back of his chair as he settles into his chair with an exasperated huff.

"It's fine," you wave off with a small, teasing smile. "Though I'm surprised, no hat today? How unprofessional."

At your jest, Naomasa rolls his eyes. More than likely remembering all the other times you'd critiqued his plain wardrobe. Specifically, the hat and trenchcoat assortment he'd become known for wearing.

"I'm off the clock and you know it," he says tiredly, scrubbing a hand over his face before picking up the menu in front of him. "And I left the hat at home on purpose because I know how much you detest it."

Chuckling, you follow along and pick up your own menu; eyes skimming over it quickly before --

"-- I heard the news, by the way," Naomasa says conversationally; for once, his voice taking on a teasing lilt as something chaff settles in his gaze. "Starting a family?" Your old friend continues, clicking his teeth as your lips twist into a scowl. "How domestic."

Damn it Toshi, you can't help but think, pink blooming across (s/c) cheeks as Naomasa starts chuckling. I thought we agreed to tell Chiyo only.

(Admittedly, you can't deny that this particular topic would be something Toshinori would tell his friends about: Because though your husband is Japan's number one hero whose known for the secrecy he's shrouded himself in, as Toshinori he's also known to be incredibly proud and transparent of his marriage and what goes down to the small number of people that do know about the two of you.)

"Yes, well," you say with a slight huff, the fondness that burns beneath your chest contradicting your exasperated tone. "We're not getting any younger, you know. And this is something we've always wanted to do."

Naomasa hums, lips still twitching. He and you both know you're not even embarrassed, let alone irritated. "I love Toshinori like a brother, but he's not exactly in his prime anymore, despite what his otaku fans will vehemently proclaim."

"There's always fertility clinics," you answer simply, shrugging. Toshinori is not a young man, so the topic of fertility clinics has come up before, and though some might find what Naomasa has said as insulting, you can't deny that it's the truth.

"I'm certain Chiyo would have a recommendation. And yes, I'd rather approach Chiyo about this. You and I both know that David has a tendency to take matters to the extreme when it comes to Toshinori. I'm sure he's already told you about one of his stories about him and the madman," you huff, blowing a strand of (h/c) out of your face.

Nodding, Naomasa tilts his head in thought. "Toshinori's stories about David-kun's hero-worship never fails to make me laugh, though I do agree you were right to withhold telling him for now. In all seriousness though, I'm happy for you two. Though I do fear the child that's born with both of your DNA."

At that, laughter tumbles out of your mouth; both you and your friend enjoying the moment for what it is.

However, the waitress eventually wades towards your table, hands digging out the notebook from her apron pocket, a thoughtful silence descends on the table. Because while it's nice seeing each other after a long while, while it's nice to joke and tease your old colleague as you always do, the reason you've met in the first place is direr than discussions about wardrobes and family plans.

Rather, what you're discussing is quintessential to whether or not you and Toshinori could continue pursuing what your hearts have desired for so long.

Placing your hands on the table, you press your lips into a thin line before meeting Naomasa's gaze evenly.

Your friend, for his part, meets your gaze just as seriously.

"Now tell me, what news do you have about Gigantomachia and Ujiko?" You ask, voice firm.
